Are rugs on top of carpet weird?

I want to get a white shag rug for the nursery, but we have carpet in there.  Is it totally weird to put a rug on top of carpet?

    I think it depends on where you are putting the rug and what kind of rug it is. I don't see anything wrong with what you are describing.

    Bath mat style rugs on carpet would not look good.

    At our townhouse we put a rug over carpet in the informal dining room (before we did laminate floors).

     

    DD has a pink shag rug over her plain old, boring tan carpet in her room.  It is really cute.  It is just part of the decor and matches her bedding.

     

    Don't know if it is a decorating faux pas but I think it looks fine...and cute!

    I don't think it's weird... but be careful of the backing of the rug. If it has plastic or rubber it can damage the carpet. (It'll stain it brownish, or rub it/fray it)

    I don't think so at all.  I have one in my family room, and it's carpeted.
