Babies: 9 - 12 Months

10 months, not crawling or even trying?

I see this posted all the time, and everything I read says not to worry, but I'm posting anyway. ha. I was ok with DD not crawling, but the speech therapist my mom works with AND the ladies at daycare are all about crawling, how it is so important for developing math and problem solving skills, and I HAVE to get DD to crawl. She hates it! I spend so much time on the floor with her putting her on her belly, knees, hands and knees, but all she wants to do it roll onto her back.

She loves to sit and play, and loves to play on her back while rolling back and forth (not even all in one direction to try to reach toys). She reaches for things, but if she can't get them she doesn't get all that upset. She has hit all other milestones, and is starting to talk, imitates us like crazy, is completely interactive, waves bye and hi, loves her books, has 8 teeth, knows her name, recognizes everyone she knows, does well in daycare, and loves to stand and is trying to take steps (with us lightly holding her at the waist).

Should I be concerned? At her 9 month appt the pediatrician seemed slightly concerned, mostly that she wasn't even trying to army crawl or scoot or anything to reach toys.

OMG, this is my kid exactly, except he still doesn't have any teeth.  Maybe we have lazy babies. Stick out tongue

  • My LO just started crawling, a little past 10 months.  One day she couldn't do it and the next day, she could.  We thought she'd never crawl.  10% of babies skip crawling and some drs don't consider it a milestone.  Our pedi asked if LO was able to get up on all 4s and rock.  Past that, she didn't care.

Don't sweat it.  And you may just find that your kid doesn't do it today, but does it tomorrow.  When my LO did finally crawl, she was pretty good at it right away.  But when she crawls, she has one purpose only - crawl to furniture or person and stand up and cruise/walk.  My LO took her first steps two weeks before crawling.  Some babies just have different priorities.

  • I've also had lots of people tell me he HAS to crawl!! I want him to and encourage it, but stop with the pressure! He'll play with his toys, reach forward for something, get on all 4s and then just plop on his stomach. I feel like one of these days he's going to get the hang of the movement, but for now he just lies on his stomach and gets frustrated!!
