I know they make special laundry soap for babies but we just use that All Free & Clear stuff. Do we really need to buy the stuff for babies or would it be ok to use what we have?
I would just use what we have..no point in wasting money on special baby stuff when your regular detergent will be fine.
ETA - BTW I already use free and clear detergents for my own extremely sensitive skin. So I'll just be sticking with what I have.

Instead of getting Dreft, we actually bought All free and clear. I think the main thing is to get detergent that is fragrance free since newborns are so sensitive to that.
We use All free and clear. DS#1 never had any issues with it. I plan on using that this time too. No sense in spending the extra $$$ unless the baby has an issue with it.
We got a small thing of dreft and used that for the first month or so. Then we washed one small item that was worn skin-to-skin - I think we used a sock - and washed it with our stuff in the free & clear detergent. She didn't have a reaction, so we tried a onesie, and that went well, so we just started washing everything together. I would be careful, though, and not assume the free and clear will be OK. Babies skin can be SUPER sensitive, more than you'd ever expect!

I'm not sure that's a good idea. Baby skin is very sensitive and regular detergents more than likely will irritate it. I don't think you have to buy Dreft but I heard that the detergents made without fragrance and hypo-allergenic are best.

Dreft is more expensive, and it ACTUALLY contains more irritants than All Free & Clear. Dreft is specifically marketed towards parents of new babies posing as the only choice, which is by far, the furthest from the truth. All Free & Clear contains NO perfumes or dyes. Dreft is quite perfume-heavy which can irritate a newborn baby. My nephew has the most sensitive skin I've ever seen, Dreft does not work well with him.
I did a lot of research on ingredients for the reason that obviously, skin sensitivity is a concern among our family... All Free & Clear is what I am using, and guess what, it's CHEAPER!
IMO: Do your own research, it'll always be the best information you'll get.
We always just used the Tide Free & Clear or whatever it's called. DD never had a reaction to it. I felt like it was better than Dreft because Dreft has dyes and fragrance.
We're planning on using some of the various Free and Clean brands (Tide, All, etc.). Most of what I've read supports using those detergents and so do my mom friends who have children with very sensitive skin. They said to stay away from Dreft because not only is it expensive, but it's pretty heavily fragranced and often reacts with sensitive skin.
We have always used All Free and Clear and have been fine. I think the main thing you want to avoid is common allergens since a lot of babies get eczema. But, free and clear doesn't have those.

You may "waste money" on extra doctor visits because baby skin can be and usually is, very sensitive.
Sorry guys, I forgot to add in my post that I already use free and clear detergent. The girl who posted stated she already uses free and clear, so I was merely suggesting she stick with that.
And in Canada I don't pay for the doctor

We use Tide Free on our clothes and DD's as well. I already washed all of DS's clothes with it too. As long as it's the Free and Clear you should be fine. In my opinion Dreft is horrible.
I washed the baby clothes in our regular detergent. Personally, I hate the smell of Dreft & I think it's a waste of money.
ETA: DH and I both have very sensitive skin & I am allergic to several laundry detergents. I've been making my own laundry detergent for about 8 months now and haven't had any issues so I will be using the same detergent for my LO.
