Soft/Mexican Cheese & Listeria

I know we aren't supposed to eat certain soft cheeses (Brie, Blue Cheeses) and Mexican cheeses for risk of Listeria.  Isn't the problem about the cheese being unpasteurized?  I'm wondering if non-authentic Mexian places (like Moe's) would serve a pasteurized queso which would remove (I think) the risk of listeria.

Would anyone know?

I have been craving nachos but am unwilling to risk listeria.

  • If it's pasteurized it's fine.

  • If you're eating it in a restaurant in the US, more likely than not the cheese is pasteurized and you'll be fine.  I've gone to my fave Mexican restaurant more than once and gotten my cheese dip.

  • I have given up soft unpasteurized cheeses (blue cheese, feta, etc.) but I'm still eating Mexican cheeses.  I had Taco Bell the other night!

::headdesk:: Nothing in Taco Bell is authentic Mexican anything. I pray you are joking and I just couldn't tell.

I was going to mention that the cheese on nachos is usually closer to plastic than cheese. But I didn't want to start drama. And lets face it, on some of these boards stating something as simple as that, can cause drama.

  • not everybody makes nachos with the weird liquid cheese.  In fact I can't even remember that last time I've ordered nachos that had that stuff on it.  There's lots of pasteurized cheeses that taste great on nachos.  If you're too concerned about it, make your own at home.

We don't take kindly to facts around here ma'am.

    Move along.

Bwahahaha. It's statements like that, that make love these boards.

  • As long as it's pasturized you're fine. I know in Canada I'm pretty hard pressed to find any cheese that isn't pasturized but I'm not sure what the food safety regulations are like in the States.

  • You'll be fine. Enjoy your Moe's!

  • I think Moe's is probably pasteurized.  I called my favorite Mexican restaurant and asked when we were going to eat there. Their cheese is pasteurized.

  • I am pretty sure that even if it is unpasteurized, as long as it's heated through it's fine. The heating kills any possible listeria.
