Sending bottles for daycare. WWYD?

Friday was my first day back at work and DS's first day at daycare.  I sent him with five, 3 oz. bottles of BM from my freezer stash, and he went through all of it.  I pumped three times at work and got only 8 oz.  Soooo......you can do the math.  Eventually, I'm going to run out of BM b/c I can't pump enough to keep up with his demand.  We've been supplementing with soy formula and DS takes that no problem.  Here's my question.  I don't want to burn through my freezer stash in a couple of weeks, so what would you send to daycare?  Would you keep sending all BM until you're out, and then go to all formula?  Would you send half and half BM and formula?  Would you send mostly formula and one or two BM bottles so that LO can get at least a little BM for a longer period of time?  I'm confused!  Not really sure if it even matters, was just curious.  Thanks!

  • I'm not very educated on the topic, but for a guess, or WIWD, I would send half and half until the BM was gone, and then have formula.  That stinks that your supply is dwindling!

We send DD with 3 4oz bottles. 2 are formula 1 is BM. I don't have a freezer stash, so it's all just what I pumped the day before. She gets mostly BM at home.

  • I don't have enough to feed LO BM both day and night.  So he gets BM during the day and formula at night.  Perhaps you have enough to do that?  Also, maybe you could try pumping more often (I know you're at work, but it's worth a shot)...perhaps that will increase your supply again.

  • Because I didn't want to get through my stash and I was only pumping enough for 2 bottles the next day, I used to put in at least 1 full bottle of formula every day. Eventually that went to 2 bottles as I started to decrease the amount of time I was pumping.

  • If you are more determined to send BM, I would contact a LC to help with your supply.  When my supply starts to get low, I pump more often and eat lactation cookies or oatmeal.  I'm not much help though because I don't want to give formula to LO, so I do everything that I can to provide enough BM.  Not that I am against formula, it's just not for us.

  • My supply isn't low.  I just have never gotten very much from pumping.  I talked to my LC and she stated that pumps will never get out of you what your baby will.  She told me that every woman gets different amounts when they pump, and just because I don't get that much when I pump, doesn't mean I have supply issues.  I've just had to learn to accept that I don't get very much from pumping. :(

Are you sure they're not overfeeding your LO? I send the same amount (my mom watches DD a few times a week and a friend watches her a day a week), and I usually end up with two bottles being returned. Sometimes just one is returned, but usually two. I feed her at 6am, then she typically eats at 9, 12 and 3 (not "scheduled" per se, but that's what it usually ends up being). If she's extra hungry, she'll maybe go 2-2.5 hours between a feeding or two.

In an eight-hour workday, that just seems like way too much.

    STM due Feb. 2017!
  • I am away from home from 7-6 and still only go through three bottles while I'm gone, sometimes four if he's really hungry. How often are they feeding? Are they offering a pacifier or trying other soothing methods when LO cries or is it straight to the bottle? Having said that, you should pump every time LO typically eats, and if you can't do all the sessions at work, try to squeeze some in at night. If you still want to supplement, I'd do half and half until you run out.
