I heard about this in an article today and thought it was kind of funny/cute. I'm all for supporting the "little guy" so I signed it.
This person is trying to get a bunch of people to sign his petition to ask the Obamas to "line dry" with a photo op just for one day. They think that clotheslines have been "stereotyped" as only being used by poor people without dryers and is trying to change that mindset to using clotheslines again to save energy and money.
https://right2dry.org/He is also upset that subdivisions have rules against clotheslines. My HOA has a rule against clotheslines. I don't think I'd ever use a clothesline...but I don't really care if the "green" person next door has one in their backyard. (As long as there are no couches on the lawn or flamingos, I'm cool with it).
My mom always had a clothesline when we were kids and we lived in a Chicago suburb (Arlington Heights, IL). So I guess I never thought of it as THAT weird....but I also grew up with a hippie dippie mom that grew most of our veggies, line dried some stuff (not all...no undies! haha) and is what some would call "crunchy" lol.
Anyway, I thought it was cute.
Re: Organization trying to change stereotype of line drying....

Our HOA has about 3 rules, and one of them is no line-drying
I would LOVE to do it. It's laughable tome because one of my neighbor's has a upolstered (sp?) recliner on his front porch, yet people cannot save money and energy by line-drying.

I never knew line drying had a stigma until the nest/bump.
Everyone here has a clothesline and most always have. It's not weird at all. We're in a very rural/farm country USA area, but it's not poor either.
It's that whole "Green before green was a thing" around here.
I never understood how line drying = poor and how HOAs deem them unattractive. It's only clothes afterall.
Well, even thought TO YOU it doesn't there are a lot of people who do feel line drying is kinda "backwoods" and "hillbilly". The organization is hoping to change those opinions.
Since you are such a fan, I hope you signed the petition.
Its funny how when something like this gets posted...opinions always get thrown around. I couldn't care less how people FEEL about line drying...but I more wanted to get the word out over a movement/organization that I thought was interesting. So much more work could be done improving things if we spent less time expressing opinions and actually DOING something!
That being said, I'm glad there are so many "line drying" proponents on here. I signed the petition in hopes that maybe the "righttodry" people will get their wish granted and further down the road HOA's like mine may rescind the line drying laws for those who wish to do so. I think its a great way to save energy and money. And I don't think its an eyesore. Especially in backyards. Ours is shaded by so many trees you can barely see the neighbors yards.
As a pp said...front yards...different story. lol
