Why do you hate Alexis/Lexie?

Out of curiosity, is there some famous movie or TV show with a stripper named Lexie or Alexis in it? because EVERY SINGLE TIME this name or nickname comes up on this board, people say it sounds like a stripper name, and I can't for the life of me imagine where that's coming from.

It's not that it's an -ie name, because Ellie/Maddie/Addie/etc ad nauseum isn't tarred with that brush.

Alexis on dynasty was no saint, but she wasn't a stripper. Alexis in Ice Castles was an Olympic Medalist. Alexis Bledel played a whore in Sin City, but she played a Yale Grad on Gilmore girls.

 Seriously,what's with the hate?

Re: Why do you hate Alexis/Lexie?

  • I have heard people use the Sexy Lexie thing...but for me, I don't know. I just don't care for either name. I do like Alexandria/Alexandra though. Lexie just seems so nick-namey (and reminds me of a dog) and Alexis grates on my nerves. I just don't think it sounds attractive.

  • I personally don't hate Lexie but I dislike it for a stand-alone name.  I think it should be a nickname for Alexis or Alexandra.  I think it's too "cutesy" to be a woman's name.  Adorable on a little girl or a young teen but as she grows into a woman she might want something a little more grown up.

Incidentally, I know an Alexis, "Lexey" - she is the teen daughter of a friend of mine, and a responsible, mature, intelligent young lady who's favorite hobby is riding dirtbikes.  I have never in my life associated Lexie with a strippers name

  • I think it sounds cheap. To me, Alexa sounds like it's missing the 2nd half of the name and Alexis sounds like a car.

  • I think it started because of the phonetical similarity: lexi sexy. Then actual strippers started using the name, call it cultural appropriations if you will, and they did the same with perfectly acceptable names like Portia, Chantal, etc. A "stripper name" is a now a low rent name that's trying too hard to convey allure and class. Names like Diamond, Chardoney, Coco, Mystique, Rain, Skye, Angel, etc. automatically invoke "Please welcome to the main stage" and a soundtrack of Guns n Roses.

In the words of the great Kanye "she couldn't afford a car, so she named her daughter A-lexis." It's marketing 101, name something cheap after something expensive.

  • People used to call me Lexie when I was younger, and I got the "Sexy Lexie" thing in high school, and it was REALLY mortifying.  When I moved, I made sure nobody called me Lexie anymore.

I do have a cousin named Alexis, and her family calls her Lexi, but I don't think any of her friends do.

I've never associated the names with strippers though.

I knew a girl in high school named Alexis and she was perfectly normal as far as I can recall.  It's not one of my favorite names but I've never had any negative associations with it.

  • I used to like Alexis but have long since abandoned liking it. I like Alexa better (sounds much less like a car) and really prefer Alexandra, Alessandra, etc over the shorter Alex names for girls. I have to agree with the pp too that said any name that seems to be trying too hard to be alluring could invoke a stripper-feel to it, and unfortunately Lexie and sexy are very similar sounding words and the "x", being so central to Lexie/Alexis could arguably remind someone of "xxx."

That said, I've known a few "Alex's" (never a Lexie) that were nice women who certainly were not strippers.

  • I hate the name Alexis because I knew a girl in middle school with this name who was the biggest biotch that I've ever met.  I don't know that I would necessarily say that Alexis is a stripper name.  Your example of Alexis Bledel annoys me because while that is her name it was not her name in either Sin City or Gilmore Girls.  So Rory would be associated with a Yale grad and Becky could then be attributed to a whore based on your example.

As for Lexie, I really dislike nicknamey names as given names in general.  Lexie sounds young or trashy to me.  I can't picture a supreme court judge or a doctor named Lexie.  Alexis, yes, Lexie, no.

  • I have no negative connotations, though I prefer Alexandra nn. Alex to Alexa or Alexis.
  • I am a teacher and have 12 Alexis's.  Some want to be called by Alexis.  Some want to be called Lexie.  Then they get attitude when you accidently call them by the opposite, even though their given name on the rooster is Alexis.

So for me, it is just to darn popular.

  • There are a lot of names out there where I can't cite a specific stripper but the name just feels very stripper-ish to me.  Alexis happens to be one of those.  Maybe it is the "x" in the middle?  Either way, it is one of those "nails on a chalkboard" names for me.  Nothing personal!

  • It is my daughters name, so I obviously love it.  I think the nickname Lexi is adorable, which is what we call her.  I didn't want that to be her full name because I could not imagine her submitting a resume with Lexi on it.  As other people have said, I don't care that a number of people in an online community don't like it.  I don't like a lot of the names they like.  It is all personal preference and who you associate with the name.

  • I don't particularly dislike Alexis/Alexa. I think Alexia is bad, but only because I used to be a phonics teacher, so it reminds me of the reading disorder. Alexandra is fine and Alessandra is lovely.

Lexi is a whole different story. I group it with nicknames like Roxy and Trixie that sound tawdry to me. Maybe it's the x-ey ending, but it strikes my ear as cheap and sad.

  • Alexis is the name of a very poor and rough reserve that I grew up next to so the name has a negative association to me. The only Lexi I know was a really troubled young lady who ended up in a life of drugs so the name is negative to me in that way.

This post hits the nail on the head! Well said.

  • Totally unrelated to any of your reasons. For me, it is a boy's name in Spanish and French.  It's a family name for me and I have two male friends named Alexis, one Swiss and one French. I have a really hard time taking it seriously as a girl's name, especially since the first time I ever heard it used on a woman was Alexis from Dynasty.

  • I know one, and hate her. She is the trashiest girl ever! I think the car thing is why most people hate it though. Although I went to school with a Corvette and I have to say that's worse!
  • For me, it sound like a car brand: Lexus.

And let's face it...if you are named after a mid-range luxury car (mercedes, porsche, etc), might as well start practicing your moves.

I find a lot of the comments about certain names on this board very entertaining (which is why I always read), especially when looking at a lot of the "normal" and "classic" names posters like and/or have in their siggies.  "Normal" and "classic" don't automatically equal nice or pretty names.

  • It's a rich girl named that turned trashy.

  • I think it sounds like an unintelligent stripper.  Have I ever been to a strip club personally with a stripper named "Sexy Lexi"?  NO!  But I have never been to one and met a Candy, Lacie, Destiny and Bambi and yet those are stripper names to me too.

Can't give you a specific stripper, but to me, it is a trashy name.

I am also a teacher and every Lexi I have had (5 of them) have been kinda trashy girls from trashy families.

  • Lexi= nickname for alexis.

I agree with the rich girl name that turned trashy

  • Every girl I have known named alexis/lexi have been really snooty/slutty. One was pregnant before leaving high school. I have watch a lexi grow up in my neighborhood and her mom is kin of a slut, and she has grown up a little brat. Some names just tend to have personalities.
  • I don't know why I don't like it. I just don't. It sounds cheap or trashy to me or something. Just not pretty.

Matter of opinion I suppose. :
