what do contractions feel like?

I should know this since I have a child but it's been years and with dd I knew I was in labor because my water broke before I even had contractions, I was given pitocin to start them up.

So what do they feel like?  For about a half hour or so now tonight my stomach has been quite lopsided and occasionally gets more obvious, is hard and sticks out on one side, the other side is soft and doesn't feel like baby is over there at all.  This has been paired up with pressure in my vag.  I can't tell if it's just baby trying to stretch or what but it's not too comfortable.

    Sounds like Braxton Hicks. I learned in childbirth class that the real deal will feel much different....hard at the top of the belly that spreads downward.

    Sounds like the baby is shifting around in there but not true contractions. Still sucks though, I could have sworn our LO was trying to fall out of my crotch tonight.

    mine felt like I needed to poo a watermelon but nothing would come out...nothing to do with my tummy area...all in the bum.

    went to sleep last night and everything was fine.  He sure does like to put pressure/pain in my vag frequently and when that comes along with my stomach also being tight & uncomfortable it makes me wonder.  I hope I know the real thing when it's happening because I don't want false alarm trips to the hospital, we have dd to make arangements for...

    I woke up in the middle of the night with what I think was a contraction.  It lasted about a minute and it felt like a REALLY bad menstrual cramp.  It actually kinda took my breath away.... Although that's what Braxton Hicks I think are supposed to feel like.  So I guess I have no clue LOL

    I went to l&d the other night with contractions 4-6 minutes apart and let me tell you that they DO take my breathe away!!! And they are EXACTLY how you explained really bad menstrual cramp that takes your breathe away or it did mine! They sent me home bc they were not HARD enough. I'm like, they are for me dang it lol they are close enough just not hard enough UGH! lol

    contractions to me feel like really strong menstrual cramps with a full stomach if that makes sense. also with contractions even the very top of your stomach will be rock hard.

    also if you think they are contractions just time them. they are most likely real contractions if they follow a pattern. i was also told that often time braxton hicks goes away with changing the routine you are doing (like going for a short walk) or drinking lots of water.
