How do you teach them to suck from a straw???

So I wasn't having much success getting DS to take to a sippy.  He will drink out of it, but he just never grasped that he has to tilt the cup, so I will feed it to him.  Someone had suggested to try a straw sippy cup, but how on earth do you teach them to suck out of it when you can't imitate how to do it, and they don't understand what you're saying?

  • I don't know that we actually taught DD to suck from the straw - I just squeezed the sippy until the liquid was at the top of the straw. That way she knew what was inside the sippy, and after a few days of trying she figured it out.

  • I introduced it really early and I think DS still has the "suck on anything that goes in my mouth" instinct.

  • I taught my son by dipping the straw in the cup, putting my finger on the tip so that the water would stay in and then I would hold that end and give him the other end, to which the fluid at first would just all go in his mouth but after a few times he figured out to close his mouth around the straw, then he figured out how to suck it and I could feel him sucking by it pulling my finger, then we went to putting it in a cup... after a few times he figured it out ... I hope that makes sense lol!!

This.  We tried the straw sippy at 7 months and he just did it.  I think some kids will just do it and others won't.  Actually, now that I think of it, I think we were out at a restaurant and I let him suck some of my water through my straw- that was the first time he used a straw, so if you have a straw you could just try that before getting a straw sippy cup.

We did the above bolded for a little while, but she didn't wouldn't catch on how to suck it. So I put the straw barely to my lips and sucked so that water would kind of fly out of it... She immidiately caught on to what I was doing and has been a pro since.

THIS!  My dad actually showed me how to do it after I was lamenting that DS just couldn't get it.  He said that was how my mom and him taught me to do it 27 years ago, haha.  We started with the straw pointing downward towards his mouth and gradually leveled it off so that at the end it was pointing up toward his mouth, like you normally drink out of a straw in a cup.  He learned in about 10 minutes!

  • With DS, we just let him play with a straw sippy every day.  At first, he just chewed on the straw, but eventually, after accidentally sucking on it, he figured it out.

  • Playtex makes a "lil gripper" straw trainer cup.  It has a spot where you can squeeze and the liquid comes up thru the straw.  Its kind of hard to squeeze so LO can't do it.  Sorry, I don't know how to make it clicky...

Three words-- Happy Baby Pouches.  DS didn't take to a sippy.  I just stopped bothering for a while.  Got him the pouches and he sucks the heck out of the mango or strawberry ones.  I had a light bulb moment, and got him a "Take and Toss" straw cup, and he did great!

This! I bought this cup for my daughter yesterday and had to push it exactly twice. Once she realized there was water in her cup she sucked immediately. She drinks out of it like a champ now!! I highly recommend it.

  • We started with just a regular straw and cup, and he took to it right away.  Bought him a straw cup with a valve, and he couldn't figure it out, I think he couldn't suck hard enough on it.  I got the take n' toss straw cups without the valve, and they are perfect.  He took right to them, and they are still pretty spill-proof even without the valve.

  • I'm not sure how it first started either to be honest but Lily will only drink out a straw sippy now..I think it has to do with us giving her water out of our straws...like she picked it up after watching us so much!

  • You really can't teach him how to drink from a straw.  My son couldn't do it until he was 20 monhs old.....my DD was able to do it at 6 months old. Just keep putting it to his mouth and he will eventually get it.

  • We were at a burger place and DH and I were sharing a chocolate marshmallow milkshake. She was watching us, so just for fun I put the straw in her mouth. She licked it for a second, then started sucking frantically. She got a good few swallows before I pulled it away and gave her the cup of ice water in stead :) Now she knows how :)
