Moms - sick kid question

So DS has a cough.  He's had it for a few days and it was just dry and really no cause for concern.  Well in the last 24 hrs it has become pretty productive.  However, when he coughs he laughs and otherwise isn't acting "sick".  No fever or anything.  He's eating fine and still sttn (with the occasional cough, but it doesn't wake him up).   Should I call the doc or not?   I'm a huge anti-meds person and I don't want them to put him on anything (unless of course it really is necessary).

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  Besides, even if you did take him in there's really not much that they can do.  My DS went through about 2 weeks of being really, really sick, and they couldn't give him anything.  As long as he's eating ok, making plenty of wet diapers, and doesn't have a fever, then he's ok.  Do you have a humidifier in his room?  That should help alot.

  • I just filled up the humidifier and put it in his room.  Thank you!
  • Our pedi usually likes to see my boys just in case...but that being said he has never prescribed meds for a cough/cold.  I think he just likes to check for ear infections since my boys tend to get them with no symptoms.

Does your pedi office have an advice nurse?  Might be worth a call - in all likelihood you won't need to take him in.  He's probably fine since he's eating/sleeping okay.

  • i'd give it a few more days.  if he starts running a fever or not eating, then i'd call.
  • I'd say wait it out a while longer. ?Little A does this periodically too, but she never runs a fever, never changes her eating or sleeping patterns (even though she coughs at night). ?We just monitor her eating, diapers, and temperature, but it usually passes on its own without turning into anything at all. ?Our pedi said that even though babies under one aren't supposed to have seasonal allergies, it's possible DD does (she tends to get a cough or stuffy nose when my allergies bother me) and there's nothing to do but suction her out, run the humidifier, and watch for getting worse. ?Good luck!
