I've been thinking about this the past few days. I have not told my work yet, only my closest coworker since we've worked together for 5 yrs.
Anyway, my old boss left for another job in Jan, and a position opened up there for my exact job. I'm not happy here, and have looked for other opportunities casually for months, but waiting for old boss to be in contact about said job. Should be soon, since May was the start of their fiscal year. Old boss knows I'm pg since we're still friends.
So, do I wait and not bother to tell current work if this other job pans out? Or do I do what I came up with - tell before Mem. Day (at 16 wks) since I'll have an appt the next week. If I'm leaving, asking about maternity leave/other details like that wouldn't matter, and I'm on my husband's ins. Current boss doesn't care if we have to leave for any reason, and I've had no symptoms to give anyone reason to suspect I'm pg. WDYT?
Re: Should I tell my work or wait?
I told my work early since I am high risk and after a m/c with my previous pregnancy, we started out with a lot of appts this time. I also wound up asking about maternity leave early, too, when I found out I'd be on bedrest for the entire third trimester.
One thing to consider. A lot of benefits like short term disability (STD), which might be what covers you while you are recovering from delivery, don't actually kick in until you've worked for the company for six months. My STD covers me for bedrest and then for the first eight weeks of my maternity leave, then my maternity leave kicks in. I'd be hard pressed to find another job with such amazing benefits (all told, I'll be off work for 7 months, paid 100% for the entire time) - and I'd be worried about what a new employer might offer. I'd recommend finding out what your current benefit is and possibly using that as a comparison for the new job.
I would hope there is a salary increase for the new job, but I won't know that until old boss finds out more that she can tell me. I guess I'm looking more at the job point of view, in that there is no upward (even lateral) potential here, but there is at the new position. I will be paying attention to all details when/if things start rolling for the potential of getting a new job.
You won't qualify for FMLA b/c you have to be with the company for a year for that to kick in. That might be a factor. I just started a new job a couple of months ago and I will not qualify for FMLA.
