Both of my kids have battled severe diaper rash - DD's cleared up when she got out of diapers during the day (and it still took a month after that!), DS is in the thick of it now. It looks like yeast again, but I'm not positive. In any event, I've been using the Nyastatin as well as Motherlove thrush cream and just bought TTO lotion last night.
That's just the back story. The part where DH thinks I am crazy stems from me wanting to severely limit DS's diet a la the candida yeast purge. Fortunately, DS will eat just about anything, so its not like I'm cutting out the only things he will eat or anything although he does love his crackers. I went to the store last night and bought goat's milk, brown rice pasta, and goat's milk yogurt (DS has to have his yogurt, he'd do anything for it) and now DH is saying how he doesn't agree and I'm making DS into a freak or something. My reply was "at least I'm doing something to try to help" - I'm afraid DS will battle this terrible rash like DD did for 6 months (his is actually worse though if memory serves).
Am I crazy to try this diet? I've tried all the topical stuff possible for the rash including nakey time and antifungals, but is it silly to think that diet change will effect things? Any other suggestions on things to try?
Re: DH thinks I'm crazy - do you agree?
I don't think the diet is bad at all - it all sounds really healthy. I could see balking at the price that you'll end up paying if budget is an issue, but otherwise, it's not going to hurt!
Have you thought about trying probiotics? I'd probably start with that for my LO (we're trying to give #2 probiotics at the suggestion of our pedi to help with the digestion issues). If it's yeast related that may help. Of course I'd make sure the diapers aren't contaminated, but I'm sure you've already stripped, etc.
From what I understand you wanting to try a yeast free diet may be quite good for the diaper rash. Yeast free is difficult though because candida shows up in quite a bit of stuff. It also may not just be a yeast thing though, but some other food intolerance/allergy. I'd talk to the pedi about it after keeping a food journal of what DS eats for a couple of weeks. Note in the journal if there are things that make it better or worse. You may notice that you feed DS Food X, and then two days later he gets a spike in rash, if you do this for a couple of weeks. Remember that sometimes foods take up to a week to really impact our bodies so don't freak out too much if it takes a while.
Diet has a great impact on bodies -- regardless of size of the body, so wanting to try out diet as a last resort (that's what it seems like from your post), doesn't seem crazy. Unfortunately as Americans we're just realizing the link between what we eat and a lot of medical symptoms. The old adage of "you are what you eat" does have a semblance of truth to it.
That all being said, GL!
Oh, and ditto this. I'm pretty sure DS#1's rash issues stopped when we started using Rockin' Green. DH isn't quite as sure it's that, but I think it had quite a bit to do with it!
Coming from someone who has a DS who battles rashes I don't think you're crazy. It was only through doing an elimination diet that we learned that DS's horrific diaper rash was caused by eating anything that is slightly acidic or abnormal. The doctors kept saying it was yeast and in the end they were wrong.
If it weren't for me making Quinn a "freak" we wouldn't have found the root of the problem.
We have changed detergents in the past without any impact on the rash (we're using RnG now and were for months before the rash). I have also stripped by using Funk Rock, bleach, and blue Dawn at separate times. It really doesn't seem to be anything in the diapers as the rash persists when we're not using cloth.
I am lactose intolerant so I wonder if he may have a dairy sensitivity so eliminating cow's milk would help with that as well as would eliminating cheese. Kiddo is happily eating brown rice pasta and kale right now so hopefully it will make a difference (assuming DH doesn't torpedo me).
ETA - he has been getting the Cuturelle kids priobiotics for more than a month now (so you can see how long we've been fighting the rash already!)
