New to DC - Day Care Question

Hi,

I just relocated to the DC area as a result of a job my husband accepted.  This move happened rather suddenly, and when I started researching daycares, I found out there were significant waitlists.  I am hoping to get a job soon, and was wondering if there are any suggestions on child care that don't invovle extensive waitlists.  Are in-home care places more available?  Or, do I just need to wait until I find daycare to really look for a job?  I am currently in Vienna, and actively looking for employment in the Northern Virginia area (too scared of DC to try to brave that traffic!!)

Thanks in advance!

In-homes are a lot more likely to have openings, or at least at this time of year know that some of the kids are moving on to a pre-school in a couple of months and know they will have an opening.  I also get the impression that farther out in the suburbs centers have shorter waitlists for infant spots.  No hard info. there - it just seems like something I've heard people mention in passing.

  • In home daycares are more likely to have openings and shorter waitlists. You can also look into nanny shares, which seem to be very common (basically you share a nanny with one or two other families, so you spread out the cost). How old is your LO? It seems a lot easier to find daycare when your kids are 2+. Daycare for infants is more difficult.

  • My son is 2, so hopefully, that might make it easier.  I will look into some in-home and nanny shares at y'all's suggestions.  Thanks for the ideas!
  • Welcome to the area!

Just to reiterate the other posts--in home daycares are a good option when you need to find something in a relatively short time frame.  When I decided to go back to work when DD#1 was 10 months old, I found one in 2-3 weeks.

    GL!

P.S.--Don't discount looking in DC for jobs--you can always take the metro in and avoid the drive...I know that's not for everyone, but it can work (and does for me:)

  • If your LO is 2, you may also want to look at pre-schools.  Many start as young as 2 or 2.5.  One of my co-workers sent her son to Appletree School in Vienna and loved it.
