hotslings vs moby wrap

I'm just curious if you've had experience with the hotsling (or any other type of sling) and the moby wrap.  I received a moby wrap as a gift, but I've heard a lot of good things about the slings.  Which is easier to use, more practical, etc.?  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!  TIA

Also, I've read there are different sizes in the slings, not sure about the moby wraps.  Should you get the size you were pre-pregnancy or now (I'm about 38 weeks)?

  • Different carriers are good for different ages, situations, and bodies.  Pouch and ring slings are great for quick trips around the grocery, but the weight is on one shoulder and can become uncomfortable rather quickly.  Wraps like the Moby (knit) or Maya (woven) are more versatile because they can be done so many different ways and distribute the weight more evenly.  Hard or soft side carriers (mei tais, ergos, etc.) usually require a special insert for newborns until they can hold their heads up.

I have almost every kind of carrier imaginable and in the early months I only use wraps.  As baby gets older, bigger, and stronger I add in other carriers.  The exception this time is that I'll use a water ring sling soon.  I didn't with DS because we didn't have a pool that summer.

  • Tried a hotsling with DS and he HATED it.  So did I.

This time around I'm borrowing a Moby from a friend.  Everyone I've spoken to about it gives it rave reviews.  I'm excited to try it!

  • I had a Peanut Shell (similar to a Hotsling). HATED. IT.

Moby all the way this time. We have it left from last time and I love it.

  • I think those pocket slings seem to be cheaply made and not good for you or the baby. The Moby will distribute the weight much better. Also, you have to watch out in any type of carrier to be sure the baby's face isn't covered and that their chin is not tucked into their chest so that they can breath, but I think the pocket slings are the ones you have to watch the most because the baby can just get swallowed up in the pocket.
