wdyt of Dean?

Hello All,

My husband has decided on Dean for a boy, without my input. He says no matter what I try to name our child, he will just call him Dean. I know, very mature.

Dean conjures up images of a mulleted 40 year old man that wears a lot of flannel. (Sorry if you know or are related to a Dean that doesn't match this description!!)  What do you think of Dean as a first name?

I don't like Dean at all because I have a bad association with one.

  • I like Dean.  I think it's a good name.

  • I actually love the name Dean! If anything, I associate it with being intellectual (academic dean). I have an uncle with this name - a professional - and a friend married to a Dean - another professional.

ETA: Not cool that your hubby isn't giving you any input!

  • It's a good, solid, classic name. Paired with James, Jacob or Joshua, his nickname could be DJ. :)

  • I absolutely love it. It's brisk and strong and masculine...and very refreshing. I would strongly consider using it myself. (And I think more along the lines of Dean Cain, not a backwoods guy with a mullet...that would be more Bubba for me :)
  • never thought of that. My brother is Jacob and DH's brother is Joshua so those would make great middle names. DJ is a good nickname.

  • I really like Dean, reminds me of Dean Cain (handsome) and also a dean at a college (smart).

I don't think flannel at all. Billy, Bubba, Rocky, Jimmy all make me think country bumpkin, but not Dean.

Sucks that your DH isn't giving you any input though.

  • I think Dean is a good solid name. I have an Uncle named Dean who is very succesful and kind so it is a postive association to me.

  • I like the name, but I can't use it due to an uncle. Not a nice uncle, btw.

And when I really think about it, I cannot picture a baby Dean. I want to, I just can't. All I can picture is a grown man.

  • I like Dean a lot.  I was friends with a girl who went by Dean so that's who I associate with it, but she was pretty masculine herself.

  • I know several men named Dean and like all of them.  One is a scientist who is GORGEOUS and whenever he used to visit our lab, women would whisper "OMG!  DEAN is here!!!" and rush to brush hair and apply lip gloss.  So I have an association with smart, attractive men.
  • I really like it! The two associations I have are Dean Cain (hot) and James Dean (awesome) lol!

I love Dean!  We considered using it as DS#2's FN, but DH made a joke about Deano and I couldn't get past the image of of a dinosaur because seamingly every dinosaur is named Dino.  I don't think you would automatically get Deano, but since DS#1 is Reed and often gets called Reedo I was afraid of the nn.

PS. we did use it as DS's mn. It is FIL's mn and he is definitely not a flannel wearing mullet type guy. He owns a very successful company and is an engineer with a MBA.

  • Love Dean. A good strong name.

I only know one Dean, and your description fits him perfectly. He has a long mullet, wears flannnel shirts and cutoff shorts and plays guitar in an 80's cover band.

  • My HS boyfriend's name was Dean... so I have positive associations.  He's the smartest guy I know with more advanced degrees than I can count now, so the mullet/flannel association doesn't apply for him either!

  • I think of it as a strong, masculine, educated name. Pretty much the exact opposite of what you described! lol
  • I don't think this thread has put quite enough emphasis on how much of a tool your husband is being. If my husband were to tell me that he was naming our child on his own, without my input, I would laugh in his face. If he were serious, I would seriously consider divorcing his ass.

Your husband is completely disrespecting you. This is one of the most basic joint decisions that you can make in a marriage. If he can't do it without your input, then in my honest opinion, you should not be married to him. What the hell else does he put his foot down on?

If he wanted to choose a baby name all by himself, then he should have taken the steps necessary to becoming a single parent.

  • I'm a fan. I think that it is a nice, simple, strong name.

    This.

As the child's mother, keep in mind the fact that YOU sign the birth certificate.

Tell your husband that he is married now, and marriage is all about compromise. This will be good practice for all the parenting decisions y'all will have to make together during the next 18 years or so.

  • Dean is the family name that has been passed down for the past 6 (yes 6!) generations in my hubby's family.  I like it.  It sounds strong and classic to me and I know that if we ever have a boy it will be included as a middle name.

Lurker here, but I had to chime in.

Maybe, just maybe, her husband is just goofing around with her. Maybe he's playing that immature game that some guys play where they act like a 12 year olds but inside they know they aren't being serious. My husband will do this sometimes. I know all we have to go on are the OPs words, but it sounds to me like she isn't too concerned and that leads me to believe he's just being silly and not mean or disrespectful. But thats just my two cents. :)
