Babies: 3 - 6 Months

talk to me about flatspots, please

My DS will be 3 months, next week.... at 2 months I noticed a pretty big flat spot on his left side & mentioned it to the pediatrician. She sent us to physical therapy to have him evaluated. DS favors his left side and rarely turned to the right. They decided that he has a stiff neck & gave us exercises to do with him. They also had him measured for a plagio cradle, for sleeping. We were told to always keep DS looking to the right and only right.  They also told us to always keep him on his back, looking to the right, so that gravity can do it's thing & reshape his head. I just feel like I am missing on bonding time, since they say I shouldn't be holding him much. Also, the plagio cradle only works until a child can roll or bring their legs to their chest.... we got the cradle on Monday and wouldn't you know that on Tuesday he started pulling his legs in & he rolled back to stomach this morning. I'm torn and just don't know what to do. I was wondering if anyone else's LO has or had a flatspot & the things you are doing to help fix it.

TIA.

Re: talk to me about flatspots, please

  • Actually I got the opposite advice about holding my DS. We rarely (aka like never) cuddle, he either plays on the floor or sleeps. We were told to hold/cuddle in a specific position that stretches his neck muscles.

We are just trying the stretches (just learned them yesterday).

We also moved DS's crib around so that he naturally looks to his weaker side. It's totally helped. We noticed the flat spot at about 2 months old. Now at 5 months, it's still there but SO MUCH BETTER!

  • We almost had to do PT with DS. Our pedi showed us stretches to do, and that helped a lot. We did them with every diaper change. We also held him in an upright position and did supported sitting a lot. I think anything that takes pressure off the flat spot and getting them to turn their head the other way works well.

I have read that wearing them in a baby Bjorn is good for the flat spot and bonding.
  • I was told the looking to the right when lieing down is the good thing, but try to have LO NOT lieing as much as possible. In the Bumbo, if strong enough, sitting supported on your lap, on their tummy etc. Also suggested repositioning head once LO is asleep. That hasn't really worked for us since she just wakes up or grunts and turns it back to the left :P. Best of luck
