Past and present food service workers: really random question for you...

At the restaurant you work(ed) at did you guys wash the outside of lemons and limes before slicing them??     I have wondered this for years, every time I squeeze and drop a lemon into my coke...

Thanks!

  • Rinsed...yes...as in got the skin wet. Honestly I would never count on it being washed or even rinsed before hand.

The other place I worked, yes, we did - all produce had to be sprayed with a diluted vinegar and then rinsed.

  • Nope, never an issue.  They were always cut and placed on ice.

Yeah, not so much.  I've worked in a bunch of places and the most that ever gets done is a rinse.  Sorry.

  • Ok so now I know that I am only allowed to squeeze the lemon juice into my coke, but NEVER drop the whole slice in there...

  • I haven't watched the video.  But I guess I shouldn't let Cooper eat my lemons anymore?   I know I heard they were bad a long time ago, but I guess I was just hoping that food handling guidelines had improved...

  • Yes, I did at all times when I worked in a restaurant. But that was only because I tried to do everything the way I would want a food service worker to do it if I were visiting a restaurant. I firmly believe that that stuff all comes full circle, so I tried to sow seeds of cleanly food workerdom (and that even includes ensuring pizza is refridgerated overnight :-)
  • Hmmm. I guess I always assumed they were washed since everything in the fridge was 'prepped' for immediate service.

  • When I worked for a catering company all lemons and limes were washed.

And you know I had to do it because you said not to! I am so glad I don't like lemon in my drinks. However, my little lemon sucker loves to eat lemons. I figure, since we frequent the Heroine Express (the 358 bus to DT Seattle for those not in the know), he's been exposed to far worse.
