Daily CD check in

Help! I'm having some ammonia issues with my diapers. They smell clean when they come out of the wash, but smell like ammonia after he pees in them.  I have a HE FL washing machine and i've been doing cold rinse, heavy duty cycle and extra rinse.

I soaked them for a few hours and added a little bleach and they smelled fine yesterday, but the ammonia is back today.

Should I boil them with some dawn dish soap?  How do I do that with the pocket diapers, I don't want to ruin the PUL covers.  TIA for the help.

Re: Daily CD check in

  • I just had the same problem. I did a normal wash routine first with an extra cold rinse (3 rinses total). I dried them. Then I washed them again with a squirt of dawn and did another 3 cold rinses. I have not had a problem since.

  • I started pouring a ton of extra water into the wash on our front loader and it seemed to help.

Also, have you tried some vinegar in the rinse cycle?

  • I third the vinegar. I believe its 1/4 of a cup.

  • 1/4 a cup and I have a front loader so I pour it in the detergent spot but I assume you would pour it into the tub full of water.

  • I have a front loader and to get extra water in there I throw a towel in every time; it adds weight so the washer automatically adds water. Actually after each load that towel just goes back into the diaper pail.

    My routine:

    Cold Rinse/ No spin

Hot wash/Cold rinse with detergent - add extra wash/extra rinse- and high spin

Dry (dryer on low or hang)

If I have smell or leak issues I strip the diapers:

Cold Rinse with some Vinegar/ No spin

Hot wash/Cold rinse with 2 tsp Dawn and 1/4 cup baking soda - add extra wash/extra rinse - no spin

2-4 more cold rinses - make sure there are absolutely no suds at all

    High spin

Dry (dryer on low or hang)

I find I have to strip my diapers about once a month. I think it all depends on your water and detergent and how well they act together. I've heard that with hard water you might have to strip more and with soft water not at all, and then I've heard the opposite so who knows.

  • Be careful with vinegar if you have hard water. I have heard that it can make it worse.

  • what exactly does that smell like? cause I don't have a clue!

I have a front loader also, and I do the towel trick also, and don't seem to have any problems yet

  • I just squirt dawn in the washer and wash/rinse until all the suds are gone.  No more ammonia smell and they're perfectly stripped.  The dawn also gets rid of any and all stains.

It will take a lot of cycles though.

however long the night, dawn will break.

  • Oh!! If you strip the diapers do it after you've washed them - you don't have to dry them, but strip them after they are clean.

I posted on the CD board a while ago and I think somebody mentioned using vinegar. I still need to do this!
But don't do this if you have hard water. I read that can make it worse.

  • Hey ladies! There's a GroVia seconds sale www.thenaturalbabyco.com

They must be having a really high volume of traffic right now because I'm having trouble.  $8 for a shell though!

I wanted to try a GroVia AIO and they are only $12! But my H would kill me if I bought more diapers right now.
