growth ultrasound question, how far ahead?

Those of you getting growth ultrasounds, How far ahead (or behind) is your LO measuring?

I found out today that LO is 2 1/2 weeks ahead of schedule, which will be great if she comes early like her brother, but maybe not so much if she is full term.

At 28w 6d she was 3.56lbs. based on the chart below shes a good bit ahead, should I be changing my diet or anything?

Thanks!!

This baby was 3.5 pounds at 28 weeks too! She's in the 95th percentile for size. My doctor said that if I don't have gestational diabetes (I don't) and I'm eating okay and haven't gained too much or am obese (I'm right on track for weight gain and fundal height is pretty right on) then it's just a huge baby.  Yikes!

Glad to know I am not alone! What will we do with all of those newborn clothes if we have 9lb babies?!

  • My LO was 1 1/2 weeks ahead at my anatomy scan, and up to a full 2 weeks ahead at my last growth u/s (27w).  I'm having another one on Thursday to check his progress and my fluid levels (very high at my last scan).

As far as your diet goes, I'd defer to your doctor on that one.  Some babies will be bigger and some will be smaller... if your doc isn't concerned about it, I wouldn't change anything.

  • Don't forget u/s measurements aren't always 100% correct. I've heard of babies being a pound higher or lower than what the ultrasound weight "guess" was. My babies are actually always spot on to what they should be based on u/s measurements, but I wish they were a bit bigger since they'll be here early!

  • The estimates on that chart seem awfully small...I thought the average for 30 weeks was around 3.5lbs.

LO is measuring about 2 weeks ahead with an estimated weight of 4.9lbs at 30w4days.

You could be right, my ob said she was pretty big but it was the chart that gave me 2.5 weeks, maybe its more like 1.5.

Agreed. My baby was 3lb4oz at 29w4d and in the 59th percentile.

  • I was just at the doctor yesterday and had another growth ultrasound.  I'm 28 weeks 4 days today and she weighed approximately 3 lbs yesterday.  They told me that she is measuring about 2 weeks ahead.  My doctor told me that I could try to cut out some carbs and try to get more fruits and veggies in my diet.  I passed my glucose test, but I have gained quite a bit so far (31lbs)!  I plan on trying to be better with my diet, but my OB wasn't too concerned.  I'm going to have another ultrasound at 32 weeks and possibly another at 36 weeks to make sure she doesn't get too big.

Your not alone at all.  I've been reading a lot of posts about this and it seems that the ultrasounds aren't really all that accurate.  I'm not trying to let it worry me to much.

  • They'll do a growth ultra sound at my next appointment but I'm measuring 4 weeks ahead.  My DS was a week early and 8.2 lbs so I'm hoping that this one may be a little bigger than that, please no more than high 8's.  I?m curious to see what they think his weight is at the scan but have also heard those can be way off.

  • I got back from my growth u/s about an hour ago.. and I am measuring about 3 weeks ahead at 34wks 4days... my little girl supposedly is not so little weighing at about 5.4lbs. I was kinda shocked lol.

  • Had mine today, 4lbs 5oz, 50th percentile.  They said I'm measuring 32w6d, I am 32 weeks today.

  • My fundal height is anywhere between 2-4 weeks ahead depending on the babies position. Because of GD I had to see maternal fetal medicine for a level 2 growth ultrasound, at 30 weeks baby was measuring between 33w4d and 34w1d, in the 95th percentile, and was estimated to be 4lb's 9oz's. I will have periodic US's so I'm curious what he will measure in at the next one.

I wonder if he weight will make he come a couple of weeks early? My son was born at 35 weeks but weighed 6 lbs even, so he was also about 2-3 weeks ahead. I was two weeks early and weighed 8 lbs 12 oz. I am starting to think there is no way around having a bigger baby in my family!

  • I also had my growth u/s today and was told LO weighs 4 pounds 5 oz, 67th percentile.  I'm 31 weeks, 2 days.  According to the chart, LO is 2-3 wks ahead.

  • My LO is measured 3 pounds 10 oz at exactly 28 weeks.  My last baby was 9 pounds, 11 oz so I'm not expecting a small baby.

You might want to hang on to them...last baby was 9 lb 11 oz and still wore newborn for a few weeks....depends on if they are long babies or shorter babies to how chubby they are! =)

  • I had one yesterday at 30 weeks 2 day & baby is measuring 3.5 lbs & per my OB, the baby is ahead by 1 week so she isn't worried (I am a diabetic, type 2).
