Toddlers: 24 Months+

2 Yr Old Doesn't Sweat

So ... is this normal or not normal? I did some googling and found mostly articles about toddler sweating TOO much but not about one NOT sweating AT ALL.

DS ... to my memory has never exhibited perspiration. I was reminded of this yesterday - our temps are getting hot and we have been playing outside all day (save for breakfast/naps/lunch/dinner).

I will be sweaty but not him - not even a drop. His shirt/shorts/under arms are perfectly dry. Yesterday I noticed he seemed a bit ... lethargic after awhile outside - his skin was HOT and he was red. So we got water, cooled off and got the sprinkler out - he popped back to his normal self.

Today, his sitter came over for a couple of hours and she observed the same thing (without me having said anything to her about it). I called pedi but waiting for return call.

Yeah - I always dismissed his not sweating when he was younger but ... I would think now with our temps being close to 90s and his constant running/playing - he should be sweating.

    Oy. waiting for pedi ...

  • Anxious to hear pedi response.  DD does not sweat at all DH thinks I'm crazy, but she doesn't.

  • So doctor called - not our usual doc as she is out on vacation - he is concerned about the lack of sweating combined with very hot skin combined with a lethargic/out of it reaction after being out in the heat for awhile. He said at this age - with the heat IA has had and playing outside he should show some signs of sweat/moisture release.

We are going to see a dermatologist ... I guess I would have thought endocrinologist first ... but he said to start with the derm. first and go from there. Until then ... monitor how long we are out in the heat, checking how hot he feels, keeping cool clothing on him ... watching his demeanor ...

Oy boy we are going to FL next week - definitely going to be hard to keep him contained inside too much :-(( Hopefully we get to the bottom of this.

  • Does his head get moist/smell sweaty? Thats the only place I ever notice DS's sweat. When his room is too hot, his hair will get all wet but his skin/body is dry. We played outside this morning, and although it is only in the 50s/60s here, his head smelled sweaty.

Nope. No where on his body does he feel moist or smell sweaty. We now have an appointment for a dermatologist - the receptionist and nurse thought I was nuts. So they had to ask the doctor who confirmed that indeed he, a dermatologist, would see DS for this condition - which I guess is on the rare side. Poor boy I hope they discover something - he is such an active kid and LOVES being outside.

  • GL! Hope you get some good answers!
