PT tips?

We're trying to get DS PT'd before DS # 2 arrives. (Crossing my fingers on this, he's still young - I know)

DS will tell us when he needs to poop and 9 out of 10 times will go on the potty, the other 1 time he's already gone.

I'm trying to get him to pee in the potty.  I can ask him to pee and he will, but he won't come up and tell me he needs to go.

Any tips on how I can get him to tell when he needs to pee.

Thanks Ladies!

Re: PT tips?

  • Potty training Ryan was a LONG process (sorry).  We tried several times at about 2.5 years with spotty luck.  I don't know if I didn't have the stick-to-it-ive-ness that I needed or what but we'd have a good half day and a crummy rest of the day (or vice versa) and I gave up...until about a month before he turned 3.  Made a big deal about him being 3 and that diapers were for babies. (You could really do this at any age I'm sure.  "Hey - guess what?  NEXT Friday is when you officially turn into a big boy....which means no more diapers.  What do you think about that?  Do you think you can do it?  blah blah blah".   I repeated teh same convo about 6-10 times a day, every day for like a month. And it worked.  I know every kid is different though.  Good luck!

  • We had a long journey as well. I know that for us what worked was that we had to consistently take A or S to the toilet every so many minutes. We started out at 30 min even though I knew they could stay dry for many hours---we eventually would do every 45 min-1 hour. Sometimes it was better for me to remind them to tell me when they had to go but at the same time, they didn't quite understand the sensation of being wet. So while it worked to remind S to tell me if he had to go potty, it totally didn't with A. (and by reminding I didn't ask him if he needed to go---that just didn't work for some reason) I found that I had to just take A by the hand every time otherwise it was a battle and he would end up with accidents galore. Hang in there! It was such a long and stressful process...but it will pay off!! :)
  • It was a LONG process with my older son, and much quicker with the little one.  The difference with the younger one is that we went straight to undies and just dealt with the many accidents that came until he got.  If you can arrange to be home for several days, this is the quickest way to PT (at least for us and the younger one).
  • I tried just following DS lead.  For a whole year.  He showed lots of readiness but just wasn't ready enough to do it without some pushing from me.  I bribed him, put up a sticker chart, put him in undies and took him to the potty often (before and after sleep, before meals, before and after leaving the house).  At the end of two weeks he'd had maybe 5 accidents total.  I only loosely enfore the schedule now (3 months later) and he is doing great.
  • Yeah, long process here too.  We did a combo of the 3 day PT (cold turkey) approach kicked off with a potty party.  We did it when he was 23 months though, because he was wanting out of his wet diapers ASAP (cloth diapers) and we figured why not, it's summer.  Varying success.  He was doing well off the bat, even staying dry on all day outings, but wasn't doing so well at daycare.  However, he was the oldest of all babies which I think had something to do with it.  We never went back into diapers because he was doing so well with us, but he did accident a lot at school.  Thankfully it was summer and he was outside most of the time in only undies anyway so it was fine.  Then he changed schools to a preschool, and then we moved.  And he started accidenting at home too.  One day I was exasperated and asked, very seriously, if he wanted to go back into diapers.  He was 27 months, and he said NO!  I kid you not from that point on he hardly had another accident again.  By 2.5 he was using the potty all by himself and doing fab...but it took almost 5 months to get to that point so I don't know if anyone should look at our PTing story as a "success" lol.
