Stay away from sugar before GD test?

I was just wondering if I need to cut out the sugar today since I have the GD test tomorrow? Doc told me not to eat or drink after midnight and I didn't know if that will be enough.I don't want to fail the test....I also love chocolate, juice, ect. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Stay away from sugar before GD test?

  • I think you should avoid if after midnight- but you should be fine before then.

    Good luck with your test!

  • If your body can't process sugar eaten the day before, then I would say that you would fail the GD test either way.

  • Sugar today won't affect your blood sugar tomorrow unless you have GD.

This. I ate breakfast (with juice) the morning of the test & I passed.

  • I tried to play it safe the day before, but I also have a HUGE sweet tooth, so I couldn't stay away completely.  I also don't know whether it's better to be "slow and steady" with sugar consumption before a GD test (so the glucose drink isn't a total shock to your system) or whether it's better to abstain.  I'll be interested to hear other people's responses.

I passed, but no telling if turning down lemonade at dinner the night before made any difference :).

  • Sigh.

No. Here is the thing about the test. It is measuring your body's response to sugar -- how it produces and processes insulin in reaction to what you eat. I don't know about you, but if what I was eating could negatively affect my LO in any way, I would want to know. Therefore, eat as you normally would so the test reads how your body responds under every day circumstances. Unless you plan on abstaining from juice and chocolate for the next 10 weeks, of course.

Seriously, if today's juice and chocolate is affecting a blood read tomorrow, you have a problem.  It's a moot point anyway, if you have it, it's going to register regardless.

I did not change my eating habits at all. I had a small coffee with milk and went first thing in the morning and got a 64, which is technically a little low.

I was waiting for your response, GB. :) Thank you.

OP, all it boils down to is how your body is going to react to the glucola at test time.  Period.  There are no tips or tricks to pass the test.  If your body can't produce the insulin to take care of the sugar, you're going to fail.

  • Don't change your eating habits to try to pass the test.

I had chocolate cake and ice cream the night before mine and passed.

  • After getting confliucting information I actually just looked this up...I went high protein before my 1 hr test and fasted as requested by my Dr. but now every site I'm seeing says you can do the 1 hr test any time of day...and you are encouraged to eat a balanced diet before the 3 hr test...https://www.justmommies.com/articles/glucose_tolerance_test.shtml and  https://www.webmd.com/baby/oral-glucose-tolerance-test

I just ate normally yesterday...and nothing after midnight...

    This.

Also, just for information, since after reading the UO's from today, some people think you get GD because eat to many Twinkies and sit on your a$$ all day.

Its genetic, it is family history, it is not because you are fat or lazy or eat candy like it is your job.

Do what you doctor told you and don't try to "cheat" the test.  You get it for a reason, and frankly, you can't cheat it anyway.  Either you have it or you don't and if you do, it's not that bad.  You prick your finger a few times a day and might need to modify your eating a bit.  It really, REALLY isn't that big of a deal.

Yes, I have it, so I know, it hasn't changed much in my world and it is completely under control.

This...it's not going to matter.  If you have it, you have it.  I do and it's not that bad.

  • I avoided sugar for 2 days before my 1 hour and failed. I ate ice cream the night before the 3 hour test and passed. I don't think it matters what you eat, you either have GD or not.
