Any runners miss a lot of your first trimester, then pick up again?

I was at the end of half marathon training when I got pregnant - ran 12 miles the day before becoming pregnant. I ran the first few weeks after I found out I was pregnant, then had a bleeding episode and was benched for 2 weeks. Since then, I got kicked in the butt with bronchitis TWICE and nausea to boot. I am now 14.5 wks, feeling good, and ready to run but I feel so out of shape! Anyone have a similar experience and then pick running up in the 2nd tri with success? I'm not ready to be finished with running till after the baby arrives!!!

  • This was me.

I had run a few marathons and races.  I ran the first tri, and had to stop at the second because I had bad back problems.  BUT, it got better, in the 3rd tri, and I started running again.

I got a lot slower, so lower your expectations and listen to your body.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks! I really, really, really want to run through this pregnancy. I didn't expect to get so off track, and am disappointed but ready to get back to it! I am running in 1/2 hour after I drop my son off at preschool. Wish me luck!!!

  • Good luck!

I am due in 2 days, and can't wait to get back out there again!  I signed up for a marathon in October to help me prioritize myself after the baby is here, and to lose (ahem) a few pounds.

Take it one day at a time, and on days running feels too hard, just walk!  It is still a good cardio workout and can keep you fit.

  • I wasn't running much during first tri because of a knee injury, but I did spinning pretty regularly.  My doctor told me it was okay to start running when I was ready, but not to exceed five miles.  My knee feels so much better and I've been running gradually longer distances, maxing out at 5 miles this past weekend.  It felt awesome to be able to go that far again.  I hope to be able to keep it up as long as I can.  I am about 1-1:30 slower/mile than I used to be and take walking breaks, but I don't even care because it feels to good to be back outside running.

  • Great to hear from other pregnant runners! I got out there yesterday for 3 miles, and actually had a good run! I did have to take a few walk breaks, but I'm OK with that - it just feels awesome to be out there. I definitely am slow (didn't wear my Garmin - I'm not sure I want to know!). I was running about 9:00-9:15 miles prior to my BFP... I might strap on my Garmin tomorrow just out of curiosity! :-)
