How often do you clean your pump stuff?

...and the bottles, nipple shield, etc? How do you clean it? Normal dish soap? Can I boil/sanitize too much?

Re: How often do you clean your pump stuff?

  • We had washed the parts every night with regular soap and hot water.  I think we boiled to sanitize every 2-3 months.

  • I take the apart and wash with hot soapy water every night. During the day I just run hot soapy water through them. We have a microwave sterilizer, so I put the parts in there maybe once a week. Your DD is super cute!!

  • I wash all parts with hot soapy water after every use, and sanitize every couple days.
  • I wash with hot soapy water AND use the microwavable sterilizer daily? Is that too much? Hot water from the faucet doesn't seem like enough to me...

I dishwash the parts. seems hot enough to sanitize and no work for me.

ETA: You also asked how often. Once a day (per day used) they get dishwashed. While at work I'll usually pump twice (I also pump once before work with a different set of pump stuff, which also goes in the dishwasher). Between work sessions I just steam clean in one of those microwave bags. I don't even rinse first because I don't have that easy access to a sink. Yes I could go to the bathroom but it's sort of a hassle and it seems ok to do just the steam clean between pumping sessions when I'm only pumping twice anyway.

  • When I'm done pumping I run hot water through everything, then I wash with soapy water that night usually. (I was pumping only once a day in the morning.) I get such a kick out of sterilizing with the microwave bags so I do that almost every night. I think it's fun!!

My GF told me they have wipes for pumps that you can use if you are pumping somewhere with no access to a sink. I pumped in a car once and used a Wet Ones wipe after I was done since those kill germs too.

  • I'm pumping multiple times a day. I wash every 12 hours in hot soapy water. between other uses I rinse and put the parts in the fridge.

  • I read in Baby 411 that it is unnecessary to sterilize bottles in the microwave with a bottle sterilizer so I was excited to stop doing that. They say hot water & soap is sufficient!

Your breast milk is not sterile, so it is not necessary to sterilize bottles and parts that often.  Hot, soapy water should do the trick!

I wash in hot, soapy water every night.  Between sessions I store everything in the fridge.  I use the sanitizing bags every once in a while because I like how squeaky clean they make the parts!

I do all this except for the sanitizing bags. I have some, so I'm going to have to try it out~

  • I pump three times a day at work, so I rinse the bottles/connectors/membranes etc in hot water and then microwave sanitize after the first two pumpings. Then I wash everything in hot soapy water at night. Since I have three pairs of shields, I just rinse those and use a new one for each pumping, and then I wash them all at night.
