Eating every 2 hours

Molly is a month old today and is still nursing every 2-3 hours, usually every 2. If we make it to 3 I do a happy dance and of course it's never at night. I realize she's small so she's going to want to eat more often: birth wt 5lbs 7oz and now 6lbs 4oz. When did your LOs start going longer btwn feedings? I have a feeling STTN won't be happening anytime soon in our house :/

Re: Eating every 2 hours

  • Giuliana is still eating every 2-3 hours and the only time she goes 3 hours is during the day. Feels like STTN is far away in the future for us. Good luck! Hopefully she is just going through a growth spurt!

  • My DD is growth spurting as well (even though she wasn't that small at birth).  She'll probably start stretching out feeding in a few weeks...at least until the next growth spurt!  :)

  • One month tomorrow and three hours is cause for celebration in my house so I can relate.

  • Baby boy is probably at 10 pounds today or yesterday and is five weeks old - he's been gaining a little over an ounce per day, and was 9 lbs., 8 oz. last Monday.  He gave us FIVE hours straight on Friday night.  ::cue Hallelujah chorus::  But it was a fluke, as he hasn't given my boobs a rest for more than three hours since.  He still averages every 2.5 hours, and from 4 p.m. - 10 p.m. he eats every hour.

  • LO actually just did several 4-hour stints today for the first time.  We are cautiously optimistic.  He is two weeks old but has been gaining weight like crazy, so the ped told us that we could shoot for 4 hours this week and 5 hours next week.

We've found that it helps to make sure he has a couple of really solid, good sleeps each day.  His best sleeps are always done on one of us so that means that we try to let him sleep on one of us at least a couple of times during the day.  That seems to reset him into having pretty good sleeps in his bassinet overnight.  Giving him a pacifier when he stirs seems to help keep his sucking reflex from waking him up prematurely, too.

eta:  Also, are you feeding from both sides each feeding or only one side?  I've been doing only one side at each feeding to make sure he gets a lot of hindmilk and that seems to help keep him full longer.

  • My LO usually eats every 3-4 hrs. He was 8lbs2oz at birth and now he is 9lbs12oz. A couple of days ago he was eating every 2 hrs with me both formula and breastfeeding. I think he was going through a growth spurt.

Last night I feed him at 9pm and he didnt wake up until 2:30am. It was the best Mothers day gift I got!

With my dd she was sleeping through the night at 2 mo so I hope this LO will be like his sister.
