Crib tents ....Anyone?

Hi Ladies,

Dh and I converted LO's crib to a toddler bed this past week because at night time he was jumping out of his crib and we were nervous that if we didn't convert the bed he would get hurt. Yet, now his bedtime which was regularly at 730 has turned into 9-930. Those two hours are him being upset and getting in and out of the bed. DH and I are giving that extra comfort because we know its a big change but it seems to have thrown him off completely. I don't want to be making him to something that he isn't yet ready to do. His waking time in the morning has gone from 7 to 445-5am. He is exhausted during the day. It doesn't seem to be working.

Some of the moms on the board mentioned a crib tent?? Any one have advice or recommendations on that? If you have used them, where did you purchase them from?

Also, I don't want to feel like I am regressing him back. Now that we just switched him to the bed and made it an exciting thing and now taking that away and putting him back into bed.

 I am questioning his readiness.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Re: Crib tents ....Anyone?

  • my daughter climbed out of her crib the week my other daughter was born.  We have a crib tent and it was the best thing I ever did.  She was not and is not ready for a toddler bed.  I didn't like the confining aspect but once I realized she is totally fine in there and it didnt bother her I was fine too.  Also, I was worried about safety but the crib tent goes all the way around so there is no entrapment issues.

Soooo Happy I got the crib tent....because I have no worries, and I can move her when she is ready without pressure.

We got this one because it is for convertible cribs...they make one for standard cribs also.

BTW:  I got it at buybuybaby, and it can be found cheaper (much cheaper) then this link at amazon...I just was showing you which one I have.

  • If you have cats keep them out of the room.  We had one designed for the cosleeper when DD was an infant and the cat jumped on it causing it to collapse into the cosleeper and onto my DD.  She was fine but it scared the heck out of me.

  • I would start researching the efficacy of crib tents and maky your own educated decision.  It can be risky depending on the child and there are no safety standards set in place for the manufacturers.  I personally will not be using one only because I work in a pediatric hospital and I have seen many deaths and or brain injuries from strangulation.  I tend to fall in the line of a little inconvenience for me is better than how I would feel if something happened to my child when I knew the risks.  Here is a quick link that I found you might want to look at the regulation section.  https://www.livestrong.com/article/170891-safety-of-crib-tents/ Once again this is just my opinion and I am not putting anyone down, it is an educated decision that only you can make.  There is a lot of information if you search safety standards of crib tents.  Goodluck!
  • Like any product for toddlers, parents should do research before making a purchase.

We bought the Cozy Crib Tent, and its a great product. The product is a zipper front dome shaped, and the mesh goes under the mattress so its wall to wall mesh.  It allows for ds to feel safe and secure in his crib.  he doesnt want to climb out, in fact if i dont zipper it, he will stand up and protest until I zipper it closed.

I have a video monitor that i keep on, so i could watch him always.  although slightly manic i also check every night for rips or tears.  the issues ive done research with showed parents who've used the products when they shouldnt have, when tears or rips (even modifications) were present in the product.  Never do that!  We have a cat, and have never let her in DSs room, ever.  Even though the tent shows a cat walking on the dome in its packaging photo, dont trust any animal to do something like that.

DS is strong and 30lbs, so although its a great product its not "perfect," and the mesh could break if a toddler is willful enough.  If broken ever, toss it and buy another.
