talk to me about pump washing

I haven't started pumping yet, but I'm just thinking about all the logistics.

I'm assuming I need to disassemble & rinse/wash all parts in between each pump session, yes? I am trying to figure out how the heck I will do this & allow the parts to dry when I start going back to client sites. I can hardly leave my breastpump accessories out on the counter in the kitchen for all to see. ha.

  • They make wipes that you can use.  You could also use a paper towel to wipe the parts dry.

  • I don't know if this is an option for you, but I always used to just leave the pump parts attached to the bottle that I pumped into, and I would put the whole thing in the fridge. I only cleaned my pump parts every evening, and it was like heaven when I figured out this little trick.

well, BM has some antibacterial properties.  It can be left at room temp for something like 7 hours and be OK (depending on what you read).

If you keep i in a cooler or the fridge, it doesn't have to be washed every time.  I pump on my drive to work and once I get to work, toss my bag o' bits in the fridge w/ the pumped milk.  I pump during the day and re-stash in the fridge.  I wash when I get home at night.

In case I don't have access to a fridge and *really* need to wash them they sell 'steam bags' that can go in the microwave. I 'wash' as best I can in the work sink, microwave steam sterilize 'em.   I dry as best I can and haven't ever had a problem.

So, tupperware and cooler is your best bet, IMO.

Those are my suggestions as well.

OK if I can do that then I'll be fine. The instructions said to be "sure to let parts air dry" - but logistically that's not going to happen.

I put my pump parts in the refridgerator and washed them at the end of the day. Otherwise I would spend half the day washing pump parts. Or ditto War about the wipes.

  • oh dude, putting the pump parts in the fridge = awesome. If I can do this, it will be great. I was already thinking of how long it will take to pump, let alone wash all the parts every time.

We have a fridge that I can use at my main client, I will just throw the parts in there inside a cooler or something - so that no one has to see it when they go in there.

    thanks guys!!

  • Also, if you want to simplify things, I would give this pump a try.  I actually prefer it to my double-electric, and this is what I'll be taking to work with me.

I had this and a double electric, and this manual pump was extremely fast and effective. Another vote for this!

I'll also add, even though I get a lot of "WTF" responses when I say this...

w/ an electric pump, you can get a car adaptor.  ANd a hands free bra.  and a hooter hider.

And then you can pump while driving.  It's such a timesaver for those of us who spend absurd amts. of time in cars.

I don't think that sounds crazy. I have the Medela Pump In Style advanced - and if I can manage it, I intend to try this. My commute to my client blows & it would be great to pump while in the car.

  • I put my bottles and flanges still on in the fridge and just tale them out when I pump.

I ep'ed with my first and pumped in the car every day. Gotta make that commute productive! Lol! And to the op, I suggest having multiple sets of parts. It will make your life much easier!
