My baby sounds like a barnyard animal

We have our 2 week appointment with his pedi on Monday, but I wanted to see if any of you ladies are in my shoes and have advice before then :)

Baby D is a grunter.  He's done this once or twice a day since birth, but now it's becoming more frequent.  It's like he's straining to poop, but he usually just passes gas.  When he does poop, it's not hard (he's EBF).  And this doesn't usually end the grunting.  He grunts with the boob in his mouth.  He grunts when he's playing under his baby gym.  He doesn't cry at all, just makes these grunting and straining sounds and gets all red in the face.  He usually stops after 10 minutes or so, but we've been up since 4:30 this morning with an eating/grunting/napping pattern.

I bought gas drops and have been giving them to him after (almost) every feeding.  He doesn't burp regularly after being fed, even though I try my hardest.

Normal?  Strange?  Any tips?  TIA! :)

  • I have a little monster in my house too.  LOL!  Mine dosn't appear to be in pain & she does ver similar things as your LO.  When she does get in her deep sleep she is quiet...so I just wait out the storm.  LOL

  • My little guy grunts a lot when he's trying to poop or pass gas. He gets red and does it a lot at the breast, but he almost always poops when nursing, so I attribute it to that.

  • I think some babies grunt because they can, my baby seriously grunts all the time, it's totally normal.

  • I have no idea if it's normal or not, but DS does this, too! Last night it was so bad that I couldn't sleep at all (he does it the most in his sleep). The only time he's not making all that noise is when he's asleep on my chest.

  • Bradyn has become a little grunter as well...especially when he is at the breast... he does not seem to be in pain at all, just a noise maker : )
  • Glad to know I'm not alone!!  He especially grunts with the boob in his mouth... it's like he's fighting it for food.  It's hard not to laugh :)
