Pregnant after a Loss

Borrowed Breast Pump?

A friend of mine is offering me her $300 Medela breast pump.  We inspected it and realized that I can buy all NEW parts that come in contact with milk (or so we think).  The website specifically says it is NOT to be shared, but really?  We're guessing it's just a sales gimmick.  Any opinions on this?

  • Our breastfeeding class teacher/lactation consultant told us the same thing.  She said even when you replace all the replaceable parts bacteria, viruses etc. can still find their way into other parts that you can't replace/clean unless it's a closed system like the ones the hospitals use.

  • I'm pretty sure that everyone is going to tell you that even if you replace all the parts, because the Medela's are not a closed system like the PP mentioned, you shouldn't "share." With that being said, I did use my SIL's pump with my DS.  I'm purchasing one this time around because hers is now close to 8 years old.

i work in healthcare and one of my coworkers lent another coworker their breast pump.  I guess you just have to get personal and make sure the person doesn't have any illnesses that can be transmitted via bodily fluids.

  • I can understand wanting so save money and borrow.  I know that the parts are replaceable.  I think it's your call.  It very well may be a marketing thing.  I guess the only thing I would think about, is if you are planning on trying to have other babies, it would probably be worth it to purchase your own.  Either way I think you'll be fine.

  • Its your call...but I say take it. Im a nurse, and at work we have borrowed breast pumps from each other. As long as you know and trust her i would do it. Just get new parts, ask the hospital for them when baby is born, my new parts where covered by our insurance.

I borrowed the pump i used for DD. She is perfect.

I have also heard this.  Buying new lines, etc. won't get rid of all the germs.  I am planning on waiting to see how breastfeeding progresses before I buy a pump.  It's something I could go get after the baby is born if I feel I need it.  Plus, I'll be home for 12 weeks, so I'll have time to see if I can continue to breastfeed and will need a pump at all.  My sister bought one early in her pregnancy, but wasn't able to bf for very long because it was sooo painful for her and she didn't have enough milk.  She wishes she would have waited to buy one.  They can also be rented.

It has been almost 8 years since DD was born...but "back then" my hospital gave me a hand pump. lol. Its weird. I barely used it (it was painful and I was younger). I should probably throw the darn thing out and see about getting a new one.
