A woman I was speaking with today couldn't believe DS was only on breast milk.
Her reasoning?
All of here babies were "BIG" (but ALL under 9lbs at birth), and "weren't getting enough to eat, period." She had them on cereal at 2 weeks, baby food and whole milk at 6 weeks.
I just bit my tongue and said told her that we wouldn't be starting solids until 6 months. She looked at me like I was crazy.
She's got 4 grown children, the youngest is in mid-20's. I almost asked her if they had any food allergies, out of pure curiosity.
Re: Had to bite my tongue..
it's the older generation that still think there is nothing wrong with it. just like i'm sure there were things THEIR mothers did that they didn't do, kwim?
my mom's been pushing me to give DD cereal in a bottle at night since i had her. she's BF and she started STTN when she was 8 weeks old on her own. because she was ready for it! she doesn't need cereal!
I think that's just the way things were done back then. Now, if her child was 2 I might be concerned but since they are grown I don't see what the big deal is. She probably drank & smoked while she was PG too.
In all honesty....I wonder why there's so much wrong with kids today - peanut allergies, asthma etc. There seemed to be a lot less wrong with our generation despite all the "taboo" things our parents did to us.
Ditto!
I wonder about this too. ?Speaking of peanut allergies, I just remembered I ate a peanut butter granola bar 3 days ago, and my baby is BF. ?I seem to recall hearing that BF'ing mothers weren't supposed to eat peanuts/peanut butter?
My MIL talks about how she gave DH and his siblings bean and cheese soup at 2 months "because they were always looking at our food and crying". She's always asking when I'm going to give DS solids and gives me a look when I say 6 months.

With each generation that passes, food allergies and intolerances will continue to get worse. Our bodies modify based on environment and food. The introduction of the in the early 1900's of white bread, bleached flours, processed foods is what is causing these issues now. Earlier generations ate whole grains and natural foods. Each new generations genetics modified for the new foods. The thinking of "well my parents were fed cereal early and they fed me cereal and we all turned out ok" may not necessarily be true. I have Celiac disease (gluten intolerant) and my mother feeding me cereal at 4 months definitely contributed to this. My husband is plagued with GI issues, his mother gave him ceral at 6 weeks. Giving foods before GI systems are ready does have an effect, with some its worse than others. Not saying everyone has reactions; celiac disease is genetic so I was more prone to it. DS will not have any wheat before he is a year old.
Our parents generation (1950's) were the first to start feeling these effects (although minimal and research was just starting) some of us are affected and our children's generation will be affected more. The more crap we continue to consume and feed our children, the worse it will get. Of course the pharmaceutical industry will swoop in with all the meds we need, but that's another story.
