I'm fairly new to the board. I'm 41 years old and having my first child after 20 years. My first child, way back in 1989, was born via c-section. My following two children were born vaginally (without even conversations about whether I would have to have c-sections) in 1991 and 1992. Both my vaginal births were lengthy labors, but everything went super.
So...I'll be 42 when this child is born and am roughly 4 weeks pregnant. My first visit to the same OBGYN that delivered my other three resulted in his telling me that the hospital does not allow VBAC. He said it was purely a system issue, not a safety issue, and that if I wanted him to deliver I would have to have a C-Section...which I do not want. (My C-Section, btw, also went without a hitch.)
I now am looking for a hospital/doctor that is pro-VBAC in the area...but this search has started me wondering about birthing centers or home births. I'll be blunt, the idea of having a child in my own home does not really appeal to me, but I'm considering it an option. I guess I'm just more prone to think of childbirth and hospitals going hand in hand.
I am not worried at all about VBAC complications since I had two without any issue and have put years between me and my last birth. I am curious to know, however, having read that nationally hospitals are making it more difficult for women to choose VBACs if any of you have had to seek birthing centers and what that was like.
TIA
Re: Hospital won't do VBAC - did any of you use home birthing centers?
I just had a VBAC at home and it was great. Like you, I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of a home delivery and I would have preferred a birth center. But none of the BCs near me would take a VBAC and in the end, I loved my home birth. My labor became fast and furious out of nowhere and it was great not to have to get in the car during transition. And I loved getting into my own bed after I delivered.
In terms of safety, I think HBs and BCs are pretty much the same. In both cases, you would have to transfer if there are major complications or a c/s becomes necessary.
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
I'm planning on a birth center birth with a certified nurse midwife. It's a perfect fit for me and I hope it goes well. This will be my first VBAC attempt.
Hospital bans suck. I hope you find a supportive birth place and provider. You know you can do it!
Is there a local ICAN group you could contact for suggestions? Congrats on your pregnancy!
i live in a rural area, so they couldn't do a vbac b/c they aren't prepared for the emergency if it would arise (an insurance thing on their part, i'm sure). so I am travelling 1.5 hrs to a larger hospital to deliver.
i personally feel more comfortable in a hospital, which is why I chose this route. I know that if everything is going great, I can advocate for myself to keep it that way, and if it isn't, then they are prepared for that.
