CIO - no crying, but no sleeping either?

OK, I've given in the towel tonight and decided to try CIO with my 11mo DD.

So, I've only gone in to check on her/pat her back once at around 6 minutes. Then at the 10 minute mark she stopped crying. I decided to peek on her 5 minutes later and she is standing up in her crib looking at the iPod that's playing music. Not crying, but not sleeping either. Huh? Now 70 minutes in and she is sitting up but still awake and rocking like she's falling asleep.

Should I count my blessings that she isn't crying? I shouldn't go in and lay her down, right? Talk me down form that legde. She can't stay awake forever! She's now been awake for 7 hours from afternoon nap. The longest she usually goes is 4-5 hours.

Haha I accidentally clicked on the wrong board but will answer you anyway! DO NOT go in there!!! It is perfectly ok for her to be at peace in her crib while she isn't sleeping. THANK GOD! When she gets tired enough, she'll lay down and go to sleep. Have yourself some "me" time mommy!

I agree with pp, just leave it alone.
  • Completely agree with pp. Some nights DS will sit there for nearly an hour before laying down and going to sleep. It's good for them to learn to put themselves to sleep. Smile

  • I'm late to the game, but just wanted to say that DS does this sometimes.  He'll walk around the crib, lift up the window shade and look out the window if it's daylight still, babble to himself, and slowly fade off to sleep.  It might just be her soothing herself.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. Wish I had read it last night at 2:30am when I caved in and took her to bed with me.

She eventually fell asleep (obviously!) about an hour after just sitting up in her crib swaying. Slept for one hour, then cried/fussed for a minute. I went in to pat/soothe her. Laid her down and she fell back asleep.

I woke up at 2:30 to pee and made the mistake of peeking in on her. She was sitting up in her crib swaying again. My heart broke a little and I scooped her up and took her to bed with me. Stupid, I know. Should have left her. She wasn't crying. She would have fallen asleep.

Wish me the strength tonight to not cave in. Ugh. I hate this.

  • When we did CIO, DD totally fell asleep sitting up and swaying. At first, I would have to go in and lay her down, but eventually she put herself down on the matress.
