Crap...our name is #1

We are naming DS#2 Jacob John.  Crap, Jacob is #1.  DS#1 is Anthony, which is also top 10 (I thought it was old).  There are no other Anthony's in DS's school, so it can't be THAT popular, but apparently it is.  I never paid attention to these naming websites before--and now I wish I did.  I really don't want him to be in school with 13 other Jacob's!

We are set on the name though.  It took us a very long time to agree on a boy's name both times and I'm not willing to go through that again.  EEK!

  • Right there with you, we're naming our little guy Ethan. #2 name...oh well. It's one of the only names we agree on so it's staying Ethan.

P.S. Jacob is a great name. It was also on my short list. :)

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it! We're naming out daughter Ella which is aparently crazy popular as well. I think of Jacob as a classic name. Also keep location in mind. Jacob may not be popular where you live. I've never once met an Ella living in DC.

We are in the same boat. Jacob is the only boy name that we can agree on. I think it's a great, classic name.

If he does have a ton of other Jacob's in his class, he will survive. :)

  • I understand the eek factor.  We like Emily for a girl and were shocked how popular it is.  Thought we were being original.  I had friends growing up named Jennifer and remember how much they hated how common their name was.  It gives me pause!  But if you love it, then who cares.  At least no one will ask how it's spelled.
  • Olivia is #4 but I have never once met an Olivia in my life. I'm sure there will be a few at her school but oh well.

  • If you love it use it!  Just my opinion!  It's popular because people like it not because people hate it!

My DD is Sophia (named after my Great Grandma but it's #2 on the list) oh well, still a family name no matter what any list says!

  • Jacob is our pick for a boy also.  It has also been the number 1 name in our state for the past few years.  With that being said, I only know a handful of Jacobs, and I'm seriously talking like possibly five and that's a stretch.  My one thought is because of the state I live in (high population of both Mennonites and Amish) that, this is part of the reason the name is popular as it is a name from the bible and one that is commonly used by these two groups.  I know that might be a crazy rationale, but seriously I'm still sitting here straining to try and find five boys I know named Jacob.

  • You guys know you can also search by state, right [although states won't be updated for 2010 #'s until May10th]? So for the OP, in DC Jacob is actually not #1, but #10.

  • Jacob has been #1 for the past 11 years and in the top 20 for 20 years.  This shouldn't be a surprise.

My sisters boyfriends brothers name is Jakob, however I didn't know this until after we picked the name, nor have I ever met him.  I think I went to school with one Jacob.  My Mom has babysat for the past 19 years and has NEVER had a Jacob!  However in our state it's been #1/#2 forever!

  • DD is Chloe, and we had no idea that it was on the list when she was born. Had I known I probably wouldn't have chosen it, but that's OK. What's done is done, and her name definately suits her. Use what you like, I say.

Jacob is a great name!  I'm pretty sure the recent popularity stems from the Twilight Saga.  For the same reason that Isabella is so high up there for girls.  Either way, if you like it... use it.

This to both. Also, just because you don't know many or any of a particular name, doesn't mean your kids won't. My mom didn't know any Jennifer's when she named me in 1980....yeah. That being said- you love a name- go for it! Just be prepared to have to write Jacob B (or whatever your last name initial is) on all his school papers. Had to do that for the first 15 years of my life.
