I am 31 weeks prego. On Sunday, I started leaking fluid. I called my doctor and she told me to go straight to Labor and Delivery and get checked out. It turns out I was leaking amniotic fluid. They ordered an u/s to check and confirm. The nurse that was on duty that night tried to have me admitted and all of these shots and an iv and having the baby all before they even did the u/s or knew exactly what was going on! I finally told her that I wanted to wait and see what the u/s showed and the doctor said. Well after the doctor looked at the u/s, they admitted me into Labor and delivery. I was in pre-term labor and I had a prom. I had to get an iv (I have a phobia of needles!!), 2 steroid shots to help mature the baby's lungs, and a shot to stop the contractions. I didn't even feel the contractions! I was put on bed rest and at first we thought that I was going to have to stay in the hospital. They checked my AFI yesterday by u/s and my fluid level dropped from 30 to 14 between Sunday and yesterday. My doctor released me to go home and now I am at home on bed rest. It is good to be home, but I am sooo scared! My OB says that we are going to keep him in until he is ready to come out, which is good. I have to go every week to see her so that we can check my fluid levels. I was not expecting anything like this to happen. I am a teacher and I was planning on finishing out the school year and seeing my students off to 2nd grade. I don't get to do that now and it kinda puts my husband and I in a financial bind. My husband just graduated from college in December with his teaching certification. He has been looking for a job, but hasn't had any bites. He is subing right now. It is really stressing him out. He wants everything to be perfect for our son.
Has anyone else experienced or know of anyone that has leaked amniotic fluid? What was the outcome?
Re: Leaking AF
I would ask on the high risk board. To the best of my knowledge, as long as you don't develop an infection or go into labor again you should be fine. Do they have you on a home monitoring device?
2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14
I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
Babyroot2: At first I thought it was incontinence, but then when I would just lay on the couch I could feel fluid come out. Same thing when I would just stand up. Sunday morning my husband and I went to walmart and as I was walking, I just felt something pour out. It wasn't a gush, more like a trickle. I'm still having trouble decifering if I'm peeing or leaking. I am still leaking a little, it's not as much as it was on Sunday. The doctor told me to drink lots and lots of water and that will help to replenish my amniotic fluid level. If you even think that you might be leaking fluid, call your doctor ASAP and get it checked out. He/She may have you go in and have it checked out. They do a litmus paper test. If it is amniotic fluid, the paper will turn from yellow to blue. I was actually going to wait and talk to my doctor about the leaking (because I thought it was just incontinence) on Tuesday when I went in for my regular appointment. Then it started happening more and more, and at my husband's urging I called the doctor. Now, I'm really glad that I did.
Dalpern: My cervix is still closed. My placenta and baby look really good. While I was in the hospital they were giving me 2 antibiotics and they sent me home with some too.
Thank you
It just started this morning, so if it is still bothersome by tonight I will call my dr.
Thoughts and Prayers to you!!
There are a few on the high risk board. You could still go a few weeks after PROM on strict bed rest, drink plenty of fluids to help. There must be something you can do under the family medical leave act about work and financially maybe you can have student loans deferred while you are on bed rest to help lower money going out.
Good Luck!
I had a very similar experience last week. I'm not leaking fluid, but at my regular appt they noted that my fluid had dropped to below 4. Apparently anything below 10 is cause for caution, and anything below 5 can be really dangerous. Plus the baby had dropped from the 26th percentile to the 11th.
I was immediately sent to L&D from my regular dr appt last Tuesday. I got the IV (also terrified of needles), steroid shots (which hurt like a MF'er), and was hooked up to the monitors. My water was not broken, and I wasn't having contractions, but the drs prepared for the possibility of an emergency c section.
All my tests came back fine (24 hr urine, blood etc), and the little guy looked great on the monitors. So they really don't know why my fluid has dropped so low - they said "sometimes it just happens". After two days they moved me to high risk floor, and I spent a total of 6 days in the hospital. Some of the doctors weren't even going to let me leave.
Luckily my dr and the MFM doctor on call on Sunday agreed that I was stable enough to go home on bedrest. I would have gone CRAZY in the hospital!!! It's so depressing being there, especially when you don't feel sick.
So I am home and trying to adjust to bedrest etc. I had planned to work until July, so that is all shot to h**l. We have savings, but I wasn't planning to use that until the baby arrived (my leave will be unpaid and I don't have STD). So, our financial situation has definitely changed in the last week or so. We'll be okay, but I never imagined being stuck at home @ 30 wks and not being able to go out, get my nails done etc.
The doctors probably won't let me go past 37 wks and kind of doubt I will get that far. But at this point he is healthy and so am I, so he's staying in there to cook. I'm a big planner, and it's very frustrating having things change so drastically and being so out of control. I completely understand how you feel! I'm trying to create a routine for myself so I don't go insane. I go to the dr twice a week for NST and ultrasounds, which gives me something to plan around - although now dr visits cause more anxiety than anything else!
I don't know how to PM, but please keep in touch and let me know how things go!!
HJohnston,
Our situations are so similiar! I definitely think we should keep in touch. If anything the moral support will be great for us! I do not have STD either and my leave is unpaid. Last year was my first year teaching and the insurance people never talked to me about STD, so I didn't even have the opportunity to get it. We have a new insurance rep because the old one apparently didn't do her job and he told me about the STD, but said I couldn't add it now because my pregnancy is now a pre-existing condition. I was so upset! Do you have gmail or messenger?
