tummy time is always a fail

This kid LOVES to sleep on his tummy. While it's nice to lay him on my chest when he's fussy because he falls right asleep, he never really gets tummy time. Yesterday I laid him on his mat and 5 minutes later he was sleeping! Since he has to sleep on his back when going to bed he will nap for hours on his tummy and I just don't know what to do. Should I lay on the floor with him and talk to him or interact to try to keep him awake during tummy time? Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas or suggestions? TIA!

My DS just plants his face into the mat and doesn't move.  It freaks me out!

  • I only do tummy time when ds is extremely awake & happy.  I usually get a good 7 minutes out of him before he cries.

  • I position him over the little mirror in the mat.  My little narcissist can't get enough of himself!  That said, we're not always very successful at tummy time yet. But the mirror gives him something to look at right beneath him.

  • I like the mirror idea.  DD loves sleeping on her tummy as well, so I can only get her to do a good tummy time when she's WIDE awake.  Best times for us is RIGHT after a bath.

  • DD hated tummy time until we got a "tummy time" play mat that has this pillow thing that she leans over - she doesn't mind it at all now. She used to scream about it when we flipped her over on her regular play mat.
