How to get them to eat more at meals?

Over the last 3w or so we've been giving them more table food (they were on primarily baby food because Jacob would choke on EVERYTHING so it just wasn't worth it and he finally stopped choking 6w or so ago).  They'll eat some of what I serve, but I still follow up with baby food to get them used to getting their calories from our food, they can still eat jars and jars of baby food.  Any ideas how to get them to get all of their calories from table food so I don't have to follow up with baby food?  Just as an idea of how much they eat in baby food for dinner, they share 38 ounces (so 19 each) (that breaks down to 1 stage 3, 5 fruits and veggies, and 2 yogurts).  Hopefully this makes sense.

Re: How to get them to eat more at meals?

  • We have struggled with this too (both boys are so skinny!) and our most recent tactic is to make sure that we give them a meal at least an hour or two after they've had a bottle or sippy cup of milk. I think a lot of times the milk was filling them up and then they wouldn't eat much dinner or lunch. Also, I'm trying to really have all the food ready to serve before putting them in their chairs. Before, I would throw them in their chairs and dump some puffs or crackers on their trays, and by the time I gave them their meat or veggie they would be bored or not interested. Now they get their meat/veggie as soon as they get in their chairs and they usually eat it right away.

    Hope this helps!

  • I've been sneaking baby food into their table food to jam pack what they are eating with as much nutrition as I can.  For example, at breakfast I will smear baby food fruit on their pancakes, or make really thick oatmeal with fruit that they can eat with their hands (and practice trying to eat with a spoon).  Another idea is adding a jar of mixed vegetables into the tomato sauce they eat with their pasta.  I've heard of people doing cream cheese and jelly sandwiches to get both the protein and calcium in there.  I've also mixed veggies and shredded hashbrowns into pancake batter to make potato/veggie pancakes - you could even melt some cheese on top!
