waking up for bottle

LO still wakes up for a bottle in the middle of the night, it's usually around 4 or 5 but sometimes earlier. we went to his pedi today and he reccomended giving him water in the middle of the night instead of milk. Does anyone elso do this or have heard of this? he said he's using the bottle as comfort and not because he's hungry but if i try not giving LO a bottle at all he screams without stop until we finally give in. any advice will help. TIA

Re: waking up for bottle

  • We do the same thing but there are some nights where he takes one sip and bats the crap out of the bottle, screaming, until he gets formula.  He looks at me like "I'm not dumb! What the hell is THIS??"  I struggle because I know that if I wake up at night my hunger kicks in ASAP.  It's a running joke with my husband.  So if I have to get up and have a cracker to fall asleep, I can understand him wanting his milk but it makes for a tired mom :)

  • I'm trying to get my DS to take his cup at night. At first we tried the water some nights, when he could be fooled,  but now we're to the point that we want him to just take the cup atleast.
  • DS has STTN for a long time, but he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night. Like last night he woke up 3 times! 2 of those times he settled himself back down, but I did have to give him 2 ounces of milk around 3am - he took it out of his sippy (he refused the sippy until 13 months, then took it one day and refused the bottle).

If I have to get him out of the crib I have to give him milk to get him to calm back down. I see nothing wrong with it, but he doesn't have a habit of waking up.
  • I think over 1 is too old for a MOTN bottle.  He will definitely scream since screaming usually yields him a bottle, but you just need to be consistent and not give in.

this is so easier said then done when your child is screaming to the top of his or her lungs at 2 am in the morning because he/she wants a bottle...I believe its a process that begins before the LO goes to bed.

  • I was considering trying the water thing - our house is very dry so I could see her being legitimately thirsty when she wakes, but she randomly stopped nursing at night within the last week. I'm holding my breath hoping it sticks. It couldn't hurt to try if you're done with the night feeding. If it doesn't bother you I think it's fine to keep it up, too. My pedi asked if she was still nursing at night and when I said yes, once, he said a lot of people would kill for one night waking lol. Another method is pushing back the feeding, but I think that only works if it's at the same time every night. Like if he always wakes at midnight don't feed him until 12:30, then 1 the next night, etc, but you end up having to stay awake WAY longer!
