Making your own baby food

Maybe I'm just crazy, but what's the big deal with making your own baby food?  I mean, it's not like you're a farmer, growing your own ingredients.  How do you know that the squash you buy at the market is any "better" or "more" organic or "no" preservatives?

I don't get it.... explain your reasons :)

Re: Making your own baby food

  • I don't make the twins food b/c it's "organic". I don't really care about that. Making food for them is a hell of a lot cheaper than the jarred stuff. It's all about saving some scrilla when it comes to the twins.

  • We're planning on making our own baby food once the farmers markets start to open up around here.  It's not so much that we want to be organic as we want to give them the best possible food products (within our budget) and we want to support local economy wherever we can.

Also, a lot of farms around here are U-Pic, so we figure it's a good outing for the four of us.

  • Like pp's said I plan to do it because I'm cheap.  I honestly don't care about organic vs. non, or this brand vs. that - it all comes down to money here for me, and making your own food is boatloads cheaper in the long run.  I SAH and have time to do it, so why not.
  • I do it bc its cheaper, I have the time, and DS has milk/soy allergies and I have been told that Gerber puts milk/soy and eggs into the baby food and I gotta just watch everything I give him so this is easier.

  • It's cheaper for one and like PP said I can introduce LO to a ton more of flavors and textures.
  • am I the only one who has found, at least for some foods, it is NOT cheaper to make your own?? Especially if you have a coupon that will double!!!

  • It is cheaper for most foods not all. I buy the regular target brand natural apple sauce that is made for regular people for DS because it half as much as jarred baby food. I think homemade food taste better and there is less waste. I am a working mom.

  • In most cases it is cheaper.  But like PP, I do buy the jarred natural applesauce.  I enjoy cooking meals for myself and DH and avoid pre-packaged, processed foods whenever possible, so it only makes sense to do the same for DD.  As pp mentioned, I can expose DD to more tastes and textures.  Not to mention that jarred baby food does not even look apptizing to me, whereas what I make at home looks appealing and fresh, and tastes good too. Plus, I DO care about organic for DD for a variety of reasons.  I know you can purchase organic baby food, but for the reasons I've already mentioned, it just makes more sense to me to make my own.

  • I like that I can make the texture how I want it. I feel like with the jar baby food I was limited with the flavors. I think the transition to "people food" has been easier.

  • I agree with everything above.  I give my FIL (who watches DD during the week while I"m at work) some jarred food because it's easier for him.  But I make a lot of her food because it's cheaper and I've actually found it fun.  I've never been a super great cook for me and DH's dinners. But now that I"m buying a lot more fresh veggies, I've been cooking a lot more healthy dinners for us as well.

I work, but get a 1/2 day on Fridays.  So I normally leave DD with FIL and go home and make her foods.  Doesn't take long to make and I know what's going in it.  I too bought the huge jar of "adult" applesauce but I got the natural kind that only had apples and water.  It was just easier to me.  I also agree with making different textures.  The first few batches of something I make I do a little more creamy, and then get thicker with the other batches. She's been transitioning great! :-)

  • I found it to be cheaper and the food just tastes better.  I was also amazed at the difference in color.  Homemade green beans and peas have such a bright color compared to the jarred stuff.  I also like that the food has more texture to it when you make it yourself.
