Anyone not getting internals?

I've decided to pass on any internal exams this time around.  Anyone else passing??

I guess I just don't see the point since the cervical measurements can be misleading about how soon you're really going to go into labor.

With my son I had all the exams and believe that the last one (which included membrane sweeping/stripping) may have lead to my water breaking before my body was truly ready to go into labor - i didn't go into active labor until almost 12 hours after my water broke.

Anyone else passing on internals?  What are your reasons?

Re: Anyone not getting internals?

  • I said I was going to pass, but I've been having pretty strong contractions and ended up having my MW check yesterday.  It's just so early still, I wanted to make sure she is staying in there for at least a few more weeks.  From here out I will pass.

  • I intend to decline. I might have one when I have the GBS test done cause I will have my pants off anyway lol.

Agreed, it is tempting.  I'm sure I'll be changing my tone if I end up going overdue this time around.

    Good luck ladies :)

  • My midwives don't do them routinely, and I don't intend to ask for them. So hopefully there won't be any reason to have them!

  • i had to have an internal earlier this week due to so fluid leaking (all is fine now) - having said that i would not have had an internal done at all leading up to labor and after my expereince on Tuesday i can safely say i will be doing everything possible not to have another one!!!! they are far too uncomfortable and nothing at all like a PAP test as they claim!!!!

  • I don't think i had one until my OB did the GBS test at 36 weeks with my daughter.

I'm not complaining cause i hate them. They were painful before i got pregnant and it's not something i care to know at this point. Come 36 weeks i'll be curious to know.

I will pass. I do not see the point. You can go weeks being dialated so it proves for no indication in an otherwise uneventful pregnancy. With the SPD I want my pelvic region left alone. I had to grab the docs arm today when she was measuring my fundal height because it hurt. I can't imagine how it would feel to have her checking me.

My MW said she wasn't planning on doing them and cited this as the reason why. She did say that if there were any concerns/ reasons to do them, that this would change. I want to keep this as low-key and not medical as possible so I am happy with MW's decision.

  • I will not be getting them becasue they hurt like hell. I will of course get the GBS at the next appt, but thats the only thing going near my cha-cha until D-Day.

  • I asked about this about my 34 week appt. yesterday. I'm going to have an internal check at my 36 weeks appt. (along with the GBS test) and then the doctor said that they only have to do cervical checks if there is medical reason to do so. She said some women request them to see what kind of progress they've made, but I don't really feel the need to know so I'll be passing unless it becomes medically necessary that I have any additional ones.

  • I will not be passing, I don't see any harm in it and since I am considered high risk, I would rather be safe than sorry.  They also don't start them until 35 weeks and then at that point I'm being induce at 38 weeks so that's only 3 times, so I'm not to concerned.

  • I'm going to wait until 38 weeks. They didn't give me any useful information last time, and I wouldn't get them at all this time if I didn't have to give my in-laws some advance notice to come up and stay with us (to watch DS when I go into labor).

Ditto. Unless something goes wrong, I won't be checked again until I'm in labor. Our Doula is actually a Montrice, so she can check me while I'm laboring at home. I'll probably have her check once before we go the hospital and hopefully I'll only be checked two more times, once at admission and again when I feel like pushing.

  • My OB doesn't offer them until 38 weeks (but she'd do it earlier if I asked or if there was a medical reason).  I might have her do one then because she's going on vacation right before my due date and I think we'd both like to know if progress has been made before she leaves.  Otherwise, I don't see the point as I know myself and I would obsess over it!
