heard the heartbeat, but doc didn't take bpm?

I had my 12 week appointment this afternoon, and everything went fine. She found the heartbeat and we could hear it (kind of?). She listened for about 90 seconds and asked if we could hear it. We could, but i didn't think it was that clear. She took the doppler and wiped my stomach and that was it. We had never heard the heartbeat before and from everyone else announcing their appointments it seems like everyone was told the heart rate for their LO's. I'm just curious... did other people have this type of experience? is there any reason that we should know the heart rate?

Re: heard the heartbeat, but doc didn't take bpm?

  • My doctor did both heartbeats today but she only gave me the bpm for baby A.

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  If it wasn't very clear, maybe she couldn't get the bpm on the doppler and didn't want to count?  Did it sound fast- like maybe 2x as fast as your own?  If so, I'm sure it's okay.  My doctor did tell me it was in the 160s, but that's as specific as she got.  I've only gotten more accurate numbers at my 2 u/s (and at home since I have a doppler.)

  • We didn't get a bpm at our last appointment. I have only gotten bpm at my ultrasounds.

  • I honestly wouldnt worry. Your doctor would know by listening if it was too slow or fast and if she felt there was a problem, then she would order an u/s.

Remember that they are trained to acknowledge good heartbeats from bad.

  • Thanks guys! i'm really not worried about the baby at all, i was more asking to determine if my doctor was doing her job. She seems really nice, but she's said some odd comments and in general has come off as kind of weird. I was just making sure that she was doing what she was supposed to.
  • My doc never gave me numbers either during my pregnancy with DD.  Just said it sounded fine.  I figure he does this 8 hours day/every day and knows what a healthy heart rate sound like and doesn't need the exact #

  • I have only heard it at the Dr's office on u/s and it calculates the number and displays it on the screen... I have taken it myself at home on my doppler and counted it myself.  I am willing to bet he just knows it sounds fine.  Try not to worry! Glad you had a good appt today!  Hearing the HB is such a big milestone!!

  • With DD we were never told the BPM unless it was on an ultrasound. So far it has been the same with this one. My dr. found the heartbeat, listened for a bit and then it was over.

  • I was able to hear the hb at 9 weeks but my RN didn't count the bpm.  I haven't had my 13-week appt yet so don't know what to expect, but I've never heard any of my friends or sis-in-laws mention bpm.  Maybe I just wasn't paying attention???  But I'm sure everything is fine!!

  • When I just had the doppler, no u/s, she didn't tell me until I asked.
  • I've had 2 appts. First we got and ultrasound, heard and saw the HB, no bpm. 2nd appt was like a 5 min appt, a tummy check with the Doppler and heard the HB real quick and no bpm. I don't thin that's atypical. And early on, the Doppler will be a weaker signal anyways. It'll get stronger.

  • I had a check up yesterday where the doc listened with the Doppler. We heard it for about 30 seconds. She looked at her watch and listened for maybe 10 beats and said the HB was 'around 150'. She didn't seem too concerened with getting an exact reading. I'm sure your doc was paying more attention than she let on....and if she didn't indicate any reason to worry, then sit back, relax and enjoy yourself! :)

  • My doc didn't tell me either! I should have asked, but I was just happy that there was a heartbeat and that she said it sounded normal!
