Race is just such a hard thing to define. what is it really? appereance? genetic information? cultural heritage? all of those? I honestly have no clue.
ETA; I thought this question was somewhat philosophycal, for the purpose of white privilege, white is just anybody who has the appereance of being caucasian.
The 2010 census considers you white if you are European, middle eastern, or from north Africa. Also 53 % of the Hispanic population identified as being white.

I think "white" people experience racism too. Certainly not as much and certainly not as bad but we do. I am a visiting hospice nurse in a predominantly black community/neighborhoods. I have had a lot of my patients tell me (after they got to know me) that they didn't want "some young white girl" taking care of them. Although we can laugh it off I know that a lot of older people still see "white" as the rival and vice versa.

Interestingly enough, there is a mechanic at our Jiffy Lube who is African-American by heritage, but albino by birth. He and I were just talking as they were finishing my car and I asked him what his experiences were (the subject came up because his eyes were doing the shifting thing that a lot of albino people have). He said some days its great b/c he can enjoy the benefits of being in the majority and minority when the situation calls for it. Then some days it sucks because neither side sees him as part of "them."
Well not to turn this into a debate about semantics but the racism thing depends on what definition you're using. I think that obviously white people can experience prejudice but in some peoples' views, they do not (in this country) experience racism because they are the majority & racism by the more traditional definition is the belief that one's race is superior to all others. Generally (and obviously not always) the 'racism' that white people experience is not stemming from the other person feeling their race is superior by nature, but historical racism on the part of whites in this country toward other groups is based in a belief of superiority of the race itself. But like I said, that is more of the traditional/older definition, newer definitions are more broad and focus on any kind of discrimination/hatred.
In my opinion, white is just a way to refer to light skin color and has nothing to do with country of origin/ancestry or ethnicity.
this is a hot topic right now- should we be eliminating the concept of race when we make generalizations about groups, particularly in regard to healthcare & looking at people's risk factors, etc? there is a ton of bias in a lot of the research that often leans more toward socioeconomic factors and not actual "race" or genetics and there are groups of people out there who feel this concept should be eliminated altogether, including on US census documents.
If anyone lives near a museum that has the RACE exhibit come, it is worth checking out- a lot of reading but gives a very interesting historical perspective about why race even was acknowledged and what has happened over time with migration/genetics/etc. https://www.understandingrace.org/home.html

My husband is from Afghanistan and he's considered white on the census and other places.
I wouldn't use the census definition but groovygirl definitely hit the nail on the head.
Lol at the pp who thinks minority is defined by numbers. Maybe in your neighborhood the "whites" are outnumbered as you make it seem but as a white person you are not a minority that is at any social disadvantage

so what is called when a white person cant move up in their job b/c they are white? how is that not a disadvantage?
what's the point in asking for thoughts and discussion if youre the only one who can be right b/c youre not white?

it's a disadvantage at your job I agree.
and I didn't ask for thoughts or discussion and I'm not the Op so Idon't know what you mean by the second part.

all these threads are running together at this point.
I will say this, though... to be disadvantaged as a minority in a workplace is in no way comparable to being disadvantaged as a minority in society as a whole. You can leave a workplace to find a fair environment. You can't just leave society if it isn't fair.

good point. It's wrong, no doubt about it. But at the end of the day it's not something you have to live through day in and day out.
I would say if you are outnumbered my minorities at your job to the point where you can't get a promotion then maybe you should switch jobs. Or get off the bump, lol. Maybe it's internet usage during work holding you back.

never said it was comparable. however, its still a form a racism. that was the only point.
good point. If I ever whine about the brown folk holding me back at work please throw my gold status in my face?
bahaha.
can you please show me where i ever stated brown folk? i didnt, b/c its not. surely you should know that there are more races than just brown folk and the whitey, right?
you're just as bad as anyone else that you've accused of being racist in these threads.

My whole point was white is more than just people of fair skin. If 53% of Hispanics identify themselves as being white then they can't claim the racism card because according to Yankee white people have never experienced racism. White people can and do experience it. It may not be at the same level or frequency as other races but it happens. To make balnket statements like she does really does not move society forward as a whole either, towards everyone being accepted for who they are. It just continues to stir the pot and keep those angry feelings out there on both sides.
By having a super easy and privileged life. ::major sarcasm::
you seem kind of bitter there scooter
Only slightly, because this discussion always leads to who has had more experiences with racism, or "you don't understand because so and so" and people feel slighted and belittled.
But It's probably because ive missed you.
Re: how do you define "being white"
I'm sure white people experience racism too. I find it odd that you ask for a definition of "white".... I define it as anyone who is Caucasian....
Race is just such a hard thing to define. what is it really? appereance? genetic information? cultural heritage? all of those? I honestly have no clue.

If you get a sunburn in less than 20 minutes at midday.
Seriously though, I think I missed the back story on this.
What thread I don't see it.
nice definition
White = The Man.
ROFLMFAO!!! That's EXACTLY what popped into my mind!!!!!
This is hysterical!
"white" I guess would be a skin color but not an ethnicity.
Our family are all pale, light hair, and light eyes but we speak Spanish and from Europe/Latin America.
If you saw us walking down the street you would call us "white" but we don't ethnically or culturally think of ourselves as white.

Well there goes what I posted! LOL!

Yes we do! And I'm not even 100% but I still get it! Baaaha ha ha ha ha haaa! They're all fools anyways!
lol
Absent of color = white.

It was a neat conversation.
i live in a city where whites are in the minority. "being white" doesnt exclude you from racism.
eta: i work at a company where whites are the minority. again, racism is prevalent.
Sorry for the length here.

by the ease at which my life has been. ::note major sarcasm::
I guess I'd need it in context to define it properly.
