School-Aged Children

How did 6 yr molars affect your kids?

DS has just been off for a couple weeks.  His behavior at school has been worse than normal, he's been sleeping a lot and has fallen asleep 2x at school in the last 2 weeks.  He has not napped since he was 3 years old!  Today they sent him home b/c he took an hour nap in KG and they thought he felt warm.  Indifferent

I thought maybe he had strep b/c DD had it last week, but his throat looks pretty clear and he's been eating well since he had some ibuprofen this afternoon.  While I was poking around to look at his throat I found a new molar half way out.  Do you think this is causing this weird behavior?

Did your DC react like this?  If so, what did you do about it?  I thought we were so past teething!  lol!

He is super cute about it, though.  So excited to have a new tooth and a "6 year" molar at that.  haha!

  • DD got her's at 4.75 years.   I don't recall any behavioral issues but she did mention her tooth hurt, I looked in her mouth and saw her swollen gums. I gave her motrin to help with the pain.  I wasn't sure it was her molars but I had a hunch it was.  I asked on the nest what other's thought... a dentist appt shortly after confirmed my theory, she was getting her 6 year molars early.  (The appt was for a routine cleaning; we didn't go just to confirm her molars were coming in).

Has his doctor done a routine blood panel recently? My daughter seemed more tired than normal around age 5.5, turned out she was slightly anemic. She had the blood work done at age 4.5 and was fine, but a year later had the iron deficiency. May be worth checking out, it's easy to test for with an easy solution.

Honestly, they didn't really seem to affect him.  When I took him for a cleaning a few months ago they said that they were coming it.

  • Turns out he had an ear infection!  Not sure if it was from the tooth (it was on the same side) or his allergies or maybe a combination of both.

My bet is on a combo of both.  DH used to have tons of ears problems until he had his Wisdom teeth out.  I hope he recovers from the ear infection quickly!

  • Oh and it turns out he had strep too!  His rapid test came back negative, but the slower test came back positive from the lab today.  That explains the sleepiness!

Holy smokes!  I hope he feels better soon!

He's doing great!  The little stinker never really came down with a full blown case of it.  But, he was contagious enough to give it to me!  It's a good thing he's so cute. lol!
