Pap smear Question

When I had my 6 week exam I was due for a pap. My Dr. came in and said I wouldn't need a pap now or for 3 years since all my paps have been clean. Was anyone else told they wouldn't need a pap for 3 years. I am not comfortable with this, I'm almost 35 years old and my mother passed away at 44 of breast cancer, not that there is a correlation but still. I will ask for a yearly pap anyway but I don't understand why a Dr wouldn't want to do them for their patients safety a lot can happen in 3 years.

Edit: I was just reading online and I guess this is normal but I'm still not comfortable with it maybe I'm just paranoid.

Re: Pap smear Question

  • My OB said the *next* time I get a pap it will be the last for 3 years... but I still had one at my 6week check up.  I'm sure you could still get an annual one if you're worried!

  • that's weird, i got a pap at my six week check last friday and was due for my yearly too.  i am back to yearly now.  i have had abnormal pap results in the past so i feel more comfortable if i have my yearly's again.

  • At my five week appt I scheduled my yearly for August (when I'm due for a pap). She didn't say anything about every 3 years...
  • The 3-year thing just started in the last few years, but I was told the same thing by my doctor.  If you do request one annually, I would just make sure that your insurance will cover it first.  Since the 3-year rule went into effect, they may not.

  • insurance procedures have changed in the last few years, and that sucks!!!
