Baby Names

Do you think this matters? MN/LN combination

I love the name May. I would love it as a first name or middle name.

However, our last name is a verb. It's a synonym for Begin. A friend said, using May would make a girl's name the beginning of a sentence.

eg. Jane May Begin.... or May Jane Begin

Do you think this matters? Do I have to let May go? I really love it as a name.

I like Maeve too, which is very similar. but DH hates Maeve.

I thought of Esme, with May as a nn, but DH hates Esme.

Thoughts?

Re: Do you think this matters? MN/LN combination

  • I think that if it's a MN, hardly anyone will even know. I only know my closest friend's MNs from grammar school. Even then, kids would ask, "What's your MN?" and she'd just say "May". They'd think of the month and wouldn't put it together with the rest of her name as a sentence I don't think. I like Esme & Maeve. That stinks that DH doesn't.

  • I would avoid that. A name I thought of was Maya How about using May as a nickname. Some names it could work for are Meagan, Macy. Or really any Ma name.

  • As a first name, I wouldn't, simply since your last name is also a verb. As a middle name, I think it's fine. Middle names get a huge pass on a lot of things for me, since so few people ever use them in every day situations.

I love Maeve (works best if you're Irish) and I think Esme is atrocious. It also doesn't flow with "May."

  • I personally don't care for the name May for a first name. MN yes.... But if you REALLY love May for a first name you should use it and feel confident about it. Smile

I'd use it as a MN, I personally don't like  Maeve and Esme
