Diaper rash

Give me your tips for diaper rashes! Jack had a rash so bad I soaked his bum in a 15 minute oatmeal bath and now he is hanging out in his rock n play naked with a chuck under him while swaddled in a recv'ing blanket trying to air the butt out! Poor guy!

Hallie had a pretty bad rash and it wasn't clearing up fast enough for my satisfaction, so I took her to the pediatrician. She was prescribed silver sulfadiazine, which is a cream used to treat burns, but the Dr said it's one of the best things for the type of rash she had, since the acidity of her poop irritates the skin like a burn. She had dramatic improvement in about 2 days. The Dr also suggested rinsing out her wipes before using them and using a pinch of baking soda in her baths. For prevention after it clears up he recommended calmoseptine, which is used a lot for ostomy sites. You can get it OTC at Walgreens by the adult diapers and it was about $8.

Eta- We also use the hair dryer on cool at every diaper change. It gets her dry fast and she absolutely loves it.

  • Vaseline every change and then beets bees vitamin E cream
  • Whenever DS got diaper rash I would use the medicated Desitin and it cleared it up within a day or two. I know many people don't like the controversy surrounding the brand but it always worked so quickly and luckily DS rarely got diaper rash to begin with.

Lucky DD hasn't had it yet but I've been putting Vaseline all over her butt and vag to prevent it (never did it with DS but that's what the nurses in the hospital said to do). Once it's cleared up though make sure you dry his little butt really well after you change him. That will help prevent it in the future. I use a microfiber wash cloth for both my kids.

Supposedly some of the ingredients are questionable if they are safe or not. I'm not really familiar with the specifics. Luckily I rarely have to use it so I haven't looked into other brands.

  • Magic butt cream
Mix Equal parts lotramin (anti fungal foot cream)
    A&d ointment
    Maalox liquid
Refridgerate and use for 5 days, if not better in 5 days mix equal part of hydrocortisone cream with remaining mixture if not better after using for a few days call pedi
This is the info I got from my pedi, also if your baby 'sharts' a lot, put a thick layer of Vaseline on the bum so the poop isn't sitting on the skin.
  • With DD we got this wonderful THICK diaper rash cream made at the compounding shop. We need to get some this time!

He's got a situation going on right now that looks pretty painful. Right now we're just using Butt Paste on it and it seems to be helping. We switched from Medela stuff to BP yesterday and it is better already. I also got some Burt's Bees stuff that has castor oil, coconut oil and some other stuff that looks good. I think we're going to start putting that on after it clears up to prevent future rash, not really to fix the current one. Poor buddy.
  • We got a prescription yesterday for Nystatin at our 2 week appointment. LO had some yeast present and ped recommended cleaning with wipe and then drying it completely. We pat with a washcloth....and then put the cream on. It has already cleared up a ton and he is way less uncomfortable yay! ;)
