We live in upstate NY and will most likely be adopting in the next couple of years, if not sooner, I'm just wondering where to begin with the domestic adoption process...especially with information specific to our state.
Thank you so much :-)

Re: NE1 here adopting in upstate New York?
Hi and welcome.
I am sorry you've had trouble TTC.
It's often suggested that couples start w/the book Adoption for Dummies. It helps demystify the process and learn about the different types of adoption available to you.
Also, start researching. Google was my friend. I also asked everyone I knew if they knew of local agencies. Once you find an agency, call and keep a spreadsheet of all the pertinent information (cost, wait, # of placements per year). You can also ask the agencies if they know of any good workshops to help you learn more.
Lastly, if you are looking toward domestic infant adoption, there are agencies and law offices which work with couples outside of their immediate area. Don't feel confined to your home town.
You state you are interested in adopting in the next couple of years. I am sure you already know this....but...adoption takes time. If you are hoping to have a baby in your home in two years, start the work now. The law office I am working with has aggressive timelines. They say that most placements happen within a year's time. However, every other agency I spoke with said 18-24 months.
Hope that helps!
PS- You're often on the Home Decorating board, yes? I was a major lurker...I love to see what people do with their homes!
I'm in Rochester....we're completed our home study w/ CFC here and are currently looking into Adotion Star (both Buffalo and Rochester). Page me if you want to chat more:)

I used to spend a lot of time on D&R, but I'm not on the boards too much anymore.
Hi! I live in Rochester, NY, too. We're using Adoption STAR in Buffalo. They have information sessions all over the state. That's what I would suggest...go to some info sessions from different agencies and types of adoption so you can figure out the direction you want to go. We also went to sessions from Jewish Family Services of Rochester (https://www.jfsrochester.org/index.shtml) --looks like they have a session coming up, and European Adoption Consultants (www.eaci.com) they sometimes have local sessions.
Good luck! Lisa
We're in Albany, NY and are just venturing into this process so I don't have too much information yet. I know a friend of mine is using Friend In Adoption.
Not sure where in Upstate NY you are, but if you're in the Albany area, there's an informational event tonight:

No registration required, but is an annual event. Maybe we'll see you there!
