Pregnant after 35

I don't mean to sound ungrateful but...

I think it is too early, but I definitely have a "bump".  I still can't tell if it's a gas/bloat bump or a real bump, but it no longer disappears in the morning and I seem to have lost my waist and contour.  I just did not think it would happen so soon!  I thought that since I am "little" (I am 5'1" and 98 lbs), I would not show until much later.  When I saw the change in my shape yesterday and this morning, I went into a mini panic attack and finally felt this was real.  I honestly don't mean to sound ungrateful since I have wanted a little bump for so long, but I think I am just shocked.

Did any of you feel this way when you finally had a bump?
How soon did you "show"?
You can also tell me I sound awful, ungrateful and vain.  Please feel free to knock some sense into me if needed =)

  • !5 weeks is about right.  I understand about the body image stuff, right when the bloat seems to have faded you realize your waist is gone.  It doesn't happen with everyone, but it was a tricky transition for me as well.

The good news is the more clearly pregnant I look, the less self-conscious about it I get.  :)

  • Peppernut, thank you so much for your message!  Really makes me feel like I am not alone and not crazy.  It's good to know I will eventually feel better too.

  • Isn't it something?  I was just thinking the other day, I couldn't wait to have a bumb, now I have a basketball and wanted my flat stomach back.  What a non-decisive person I am. LOL!

What you're feeling is completely normal.  And being that you are very small, that's why your showing so early.  Enjoy being able to move around with ease.  I was just wrestling around with my SO and felt the need to rest.  He beat me. Huh?

  • Being plus size, I was glad to see a bump at all.  Folks at work didn't really noticed (or inquire) that I was pg until my 6 mo.  Now, it looks like I'm carrying a basketball around under my clothes.

Pearly, I thought I was alone in 'fighting' for body/space rights with my LO .. he's quite demanding!

  • I spent 9 months (ironically!) losing 50 pounds before I got pregnant - I had 40 more to goal.

I've been struggling a lot with food and body image all of my life and was finally getting a grip on things.

I've got a food addiction and body dismorphic disorder - being pregnant has knocked me clear off the wagon I was on.  I struggle even now - VERY visably pregnant and NOT fat - when I look in the mirror.  Occassionally my brain allows me to really SEE my body for what it is, pregnant.  But usually I see fat.  it's been really hard.  Rationally, I know the truth.  But because of my 'issues' it's been really hard.

I've seen a "bump" for awhile now - around 14 or 15 weeks - and I've been taking a few pictures here and there so that I can go back and tell my brain "told you so" in an effort to align my perception.

Ok - I'm not sure any of that made any sense...my brain is a really messed up place to be when it comes to body image.  I'm just used to the chaos...

  • I started showing at about 15 weeks as well. And the "littler" you are, the sooner you would show. I understand how you feel, I felt the same way:) But you get used to it...until it gets really big and then you want to be done with the pregnancy:)

We have not done "showing your bump" photos in weeks. Maybe it is time to do it again...:)

You are right! we haven't! Tomorrow is HDBD (hump day, bump day) so lets post them. I want to see McWhittaker. To see the difference between how she was carring and now that she dropped....Plus I have been getting a lot of "Your so small for only having 4 weeks left" I think I'm huge!

I am also really small although not short (5'6" and 110 lbs) and didn't start showing until about 20 weeks with both pregnancies. It's still not obvious when I am clothed. I had the same body image issues but less so this time around, as I know I got my flat stomach back right away after DD1 and was back in prepregnancy clothes leaving the hospital.

  • I am only 5ft tall and I seemed to show a little early too. Frankly I was glad when it was really obvious. That way folks knew that I was pregnant and hadn't just put on a few lbs.
  • Seemed to me that ladies that were short waisted start to show really early.

I was definitely showing by 16 weeks.

  • Thanks for all your responses and reassurance.  I didn't really think of it this way before, but I agree that it is a body image issue.  It is also reassuring to know that other women with short torsos started showing around the same time. Thank you!

  • I think how long your torso is makes a huge difference.  I am very long waisted and didn't show until around 20-22 weeks, however my sister in law (very short) showed by 14-15 weeks :)

Haribo- you definitely need to post a bump picture for us tomorrow :)
