November 2011 Moms

Eating the placenta....would you?

A friend of mine recently mentioned that she consumed the placenta a few days after birth (she found a recipe for placenta bolognese).  I also read about a woman who cooked and then froze her placenta and put it into capsules which she took daily. Apparently it is supposed to be full of nutrients and some people believe that it helps with post-pardum depression. It definitely isn't for me, but I was wondering what everyone else thought?

    THIS!

    Ick!

  • We are doing the pill form, in order to try to avoid PPD and to replenish my body's nutrients after birth. I know it's not for everyone, but I'm more comfortable doing that then taking a chemically-based drug for the same purpose. As long as all the November mamas take care of themselves after birth, I am happy.

This, plus I am surprised that the hospital would let her take it home.

  • I would never. But I have seen where a woman did, she had it cooked or something and then put into pills. No thanks.
  • No way!  I have read about this but there is no way I would!

    Yes

  • If I knew how to get it into pill form and I was having a homebirth- yes I would.  Not sure I could down it as actual food but as a pill- yes.  Like PP said, I'd much rather ingest that than some sort of chemical crap and does lord knows what to you.  Plus with some PPD meds you can't BF and thats extremely important to me.  I added the homebirth part because I know lots of hospitals don't allow you to take home the placenta.

Me too!  That's the current plan: to have it dried, ground and encapsulated.  I still need to do some research.  I'm pretty certain there is no way I could consume it raw (in a smoothie), but I read recently about someone encapsulating it raw.  I need to look into whether that would be more beneficial than dried & ground, because I think I can handle capsules, regardless of what's inside.  I don't quite understand how raw encapsulated works though...how it doesn't disintegrate the capsule.

I've suffered with depression for 10 years.  If I can get beneficial effects from consuming the placenta and avoid going back on meds (which might prevent me from breastfeeding), I'm all for it.

Depending on the state, there are laws in place that say hospitals cannot prevent you from keeping it. A lot of traditionally trained MW in my area offer the pill-making as a service, and you do not have to use them for your pre-natal/birth practitioner. Around here, it's 200 dollars or so, and the MW comes to your house, with her own pots and such and makes them.

  • Blahhh - definitely not for me!  I've read that some women bury theirs under a tree or something for good luck.  Or some have it dried and put up as art work on their wall.. what the?!
