Camera recommendations?

We currently have an Olympus Stylus 1010 10.1megapixel.  Have loved it, but it has been dropped a few too many times.  Last year I bought the Olympus TG-310 14 MP (suppossed to be shock proof, water proof) takes awful pictures.

Looking to buy a nice new one.  Before I just buy another Stylus 1010, does anyone have any recommendations on a good, easy to use digital camera?

  • We currently have a older 6.0mp Cannon Elph and we LOVE it!  It is our second Cannon Elph. We are actually about to upgrade to a new one before the baby gets here.  It takes wonderful pictures!

My mom has a Kodak and it takes horrible pictures.

  • I bought a Nikon D5000 DSLR camera last year in September for my cruise. It is really easy to use for the basic features (it can get pretty high-tech). It took amazing pictures. My friend has the same one and uses it for family photos. It's a little pricey though at aroud $700. It is amazing though and one you'll have for a really long time if not forever.

  • We have a Canon powershot Elph, but recently got a Canon Rebel XS DSLR and LOVE it!!!!!!  It is the best and it is nice to not have the delay when you are trying to catch a baby smiling or doing something cute.

  • We got a nikon S8100 as part of our TTC prep.  I love it!!  It takes wonderful pics, its easy to use!  I am scared to death to drop it, but I drop everything; watch out LO.  An added bonus is the HD video 1080p, the sound isn't camcorder quality but its not horrible either.  The video part of it will do when I have the camera and quickly want to record without switching devices.

  • How "nice" are we talking here?

We just bought a Canon Rebel t2i and LOVE it. I'm learning how to use all of the functions but there is a really awesome "auto" setting that works really well.
Slightly heavy compared to your point and shoot but I wanted a nice camera for when our LO is born.

  • If you go with a bigger DSLR, I would recommend you stick with an Olympus, because they are cheaper, and the lenses are cheaper as well. Plus, you seem to like Olympus fairly well already. They have a lot of refurbished options that are cheaper and work just as well, too. I have an old E-500 that I love, and the E-3 is nice, too.

That said, I would recommend you NOT go with a DSLR if you are looking for something to have on hand all the time. Not having the delay is nice, but they are heavy, especially when you are carrying anything else as well. There are a lot of cameras that work really well and are more portable.

As far as image quality goes, the biggest thing I have noticed is that Digital Zoom KILLS picture quality, so if you want a zoom, look for Optical zoom.

  • We have the Nikon D3100 which is a bigger DSLR but I really considered the Canon S95 and Canon G12 as well.  All three are wonderful cameras it comes down to your goals and budget.  We went with the NIkon because I am planning to take some photography classes and pursue it as a hobby.  The G12 and S95 would be good for someone looking to take some great photos while keeping within a budget and/or having a smaller camera.

  • Point and shoot:  Panasonic Lumix (hands down, never seen better picture quality on any other point and shoot ever).

DSLR: I prefer Canon, but everyone who has spent any time thinking about more than just whether to turn on the flash has an opinion on this point.  I highly recommend a DSLR - it's not always the most portable, but the photo quality is so far superior to point and shoots that I never regret hauling it around. You can very often find good deals on used entry-level DSLRs like the Canon T1i or T2i or XSi being sold by people who graduate to even more professional cameras.  Stalk your local camera store to see what deals can be had (I always recommend buying used cameras from a brick and mortar store so you can see and hold them - there's a bit more risk buying used than new, so being able to test in store as opposed to buying online eliminates a lot of problems).
