s/o push presents

I saw them mentioned in the post below and was wondering. Did you / will you get one?

Me: No I didn't. I have never heard them mentioned anywhere other than the bump and I think if I brought up the term push present to DH he would look at me like I had two heads.

Re: s/o push presents

  • I never got any kind of present. Was I looking for something? No. I told DH that all I wanted was to bring home a healthy baby.

  • I also had never heard of this before the Bump. I'm sure DH has never heard of it, but if I told him about it, then he'd feel obligated to get me something. I don't need a push present - as long as I get to take the baby home, I'm good.

  • I got one - I don't think I ever mentioned anything to DH about them either, so I'm not sure where he got the idea. My friend/doula said something to him about it the day DD was born and already knew what he was getting, but hadn't gotten it yet.

My birthday was a week after DD was born - and my birthday present was a combo w/ the "push" present (which wasn't a push present since DD was a c/section). Its a pink sapphire pendant.  Its pretty and I wore it everyday for awhile, but haven't worn it in a while.

  • The first time I heard of it was last season on Bethenny Ever After.  I think this is a crazy trend.  I figure my gift is my healthy baby which is all I would want anyway.

I never mentioned push presents to DH and when he mentioned it to me, I was surprised he even knew about the idea and told him I wanted nothing. Our BIL put the idea in his head and he took it upon himself to buy me a Kindle (to use while in labor which went too fast to use anyway!) though I said over and over I didn't want anything.

I wouldn't refuse the gift, and while he was sweet in giving it to me, it was unnecessary. All I wanted was my baby, happy and healthy.

  • yeah, I guess I am wondering if your H did get you one, where did he get the idea from? Is it common in your circle?

  • No, I didn't get one.  I think it's a silly gift, but that is just me.
  • I don't know if i'll get one or not. SIL got one from DH's brother, and I think I mentioned it to him. I'm not expecting anything, but won't refuse.

  • No my healthy baby was my gift. I mentioned to him once as a joke and he was totally shocked. I had only heard about it from the bump...

  • I'd heard about them from a friend a few years ago.  Her DH went to Dartmouth for grad school, in a very pretegious program.  Most of the other couples she is friends with from the program come from very elite backgrounds and have lots of $ and many of them were either PG or got PG during the 2 year program.  My friend and her DH don't share the same background so she was kind of taken back when the girls would talk about the "push presents" they expected to get/did get.  Most of them got/expected huge pieces of jewelry, like 2 carat diamon rings.

While I think it's a very nice gesture for a husband/SO to get their wife/SO a gift for bringing their child into the world, I find the term "push present" puke worthy.  I cringe whenever I hear "push present" probably because of the way my friend described it to as these girls expecting their husbands to spend thousands on jewelry for them because they "gave them a child," like none of them thought the child itself was present enough.  I think the entitlement of my BFF's friends turned me off to the whole thing.

I totally agree with that statement....I think its sweet if the DH wants to get something nice to celebrate the birth of the child but the whole expectation of a gift is a huge turn-off. And the term. OMG I hate the term too :)

  • DH probably will because he's a big gift giver.  He's asked me several times what I want and I either ignore him or tell him something for the baby's room which he says "doesn't count" but I think he's coming around.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I don't think the idea of a "push present" is that out there.  Yes, like Cooper said, the name is cringe worthy, but aside from that, why not??  Do I expect it, absolutely not, but the idea of DH recognizing that my body went through hell for 9 months plus labor and delivery is really sweet.

  • any gift that's given w/ love is a good gift IMO - its when people feel entitled to presents or feel the need to dictate them and/or compete w/ friends - something feels gross.

  • Camden & Kathryn, those are my thoughts exactly, I think it's a wonderful thing if it's a gift given out of love/appreciation for carring and giving birth.  It's just that term "push present" that makes me cringe

  • I delivered DS 2 days after mothers day last year so he held my mothers day present that he apparently had purchased a month earlier and gave it to me after I delivered.  It was a set of charms from Pandora  --- mom with pink spacers.  Not sure it was meant as a push present but either way I loved it and it was so sweet....had no idea he had it for me.

If you consider DH taking care of the baby (changing and rocking) while I was recovering in the hospital a push present...then yes.  That was my gift.  I have heard some people get a push present--a friend of mine got a coach diaper bag.  But her baby was almost 2 months...may not have been one and I just assumed it was.

  • i did not receive any gift for my first child, but i also had never heard of a push present before so it was really no big deal.  about a year after my daughter was born i heard of a friend receiving a push present and casually joked about it to my husband, but then nothing was ever said again.  jump ahead TWO more years and my husband surprised me with a wonderful burberry diaper after the birth of our second daughter.  it is a nice sentiment, but not necessary.
  • Yes, DH gave me a necklace with a pearl pendant.  He said that he liked the symbolism because pearl grows hidden inside something.

  • For my birthday when I was pregnant, DH gave me (as he called it) a birthday/"thanks for carrying/delivering our baby" gift, which was an eternity band that matches my wedding set (my wedding band is an eternity band, so this was a second band to wear on the other side of my e-ring).  So... even though it was months before DS arrived, I suppose that was my "push present," in a way???

In any event, it wasn't necessary or expected, but it certainly was sweet of him to recognize what I was going through!

  • We were watching Platinum Babies and H saw one of the husbands give his wife a push present.  I totally wasn't expecting it, but I received one.  A necklace and ring with LO's birthstone.  I rarely wear them, but I love them.  For me, having LO was enough...I didn't need a gift.

My cousin got a push present for both of her children and they are currently 11 and 8 but it wasn't called a push present back then.

I really wanted nice diamond earrings and had been asking DH for them for years, he always thought I was joking.  The Christmas before DD was born, DH asked me what I wanted and I told him, again, diamond earrings - and he could get them for me for Christmas, my birthday (in January) and as a push present combo gift and I would help by contirbuiting my Christmas and birthday money that his parents always send, since I had saved it from the year before.

Since the pushing/slice, since DD was a c/s was the latest event, I had to wait until March to get my earrings but I've worn them every day since.

Do I expect a push pressie for this baby - nope, I'm happy with my earrings.

And I got a gift for DH also, I bought a video camera and gave it to him at the hospital.

Right?!?  I totally teared up when he told me why he picked it.  Sometimes it blows me away when I think about how much thought and effort he puts into stuff like this.

It totally makes up for his inability to put dirty clothes inside the laundry basket.  LOL.

  • I told DH that all I expect is an order of hot wings with lots of blue cheese dressing.

We joke about push presents b/c one of his co-workers bought his wife something from Tiffany for each of their 3 kids. While it's a sweet gesture to mark the pregnancy/birth with something special, we both think that spending lots of money is just ridiculous. So, I better get some blue cheese dressing. ;)

LOL-all I wanted was a nice COLD turkey sub (I cut out lunchmeat during my pregnancy unless I heated it up). He had to go get me one right away!
